NEM Assessment Study
Introduction

• Connection shall be done internally, which result there will be no

requirement in upgrading the existing utility supply infrastructure.
• NEM Consumer shall appoint a qualified consultant to design the
interconnection between the solar PV to his existing plant.
NEM – Assessment Study (NEMAS)

Assessment Study is required to determine technical impact of excess

energy to the grid during low load in terms of voltage rise and
penetration limit

Assessment Study
• Voltage Variation
• Power Factor
• Short Circuit violation
• Capacity compliance(Base on Criteria).
Voltage Variation

• The Indirect Solar PV power Generation shall be able to operating

between the voltage range as table below :

Nominal Voltage (V) Steady State Voltage limits

400 + 10% and – 6%
230 + 10% and – 6%
11000 + 5%
Power Factor
• Customer should be aware that if the installed Solar PV is set to operate at unity power factor the
reactive power for their load will be totally imported from TNB, and real power will be mixed of
own generation and import from TNB.
• This will result low power factor reading as the ratio of the reactive power to real power is higher
with its own generation.
• Thus PF = / + , Eg.
Mitigation PF
• Installed power factor mitigation equipment (Example-Cap bank)
• SP need to ensure the capacity applied match the load profile
• The Inverter operate not at unity pf subject to no violation on TNB
voltage limit
Short Circuit
• The Distribution licensee is required to ensure that the short circuit
level of the network is within the equipment ratings.
• Therefore, the maximum fault level shall be within 90 % the
equipment design rating.
• Typical equipment rating in Distribution Network:
Capacity Compliance
• For domestic or residential consumers, Solar PV penetration limit is ≤ 72kWp (for 3 phase
supply) but subject to maximum 60% of fuse rating or 60% of current transformer rating.

• For commercial LV or industrial LV consumers, Solar PV penetration limit is 60% of fuse

rating or 60% of CT rating.

• For commercial MV or industrial MV consumers, Solar PV penetration limit is 75% of

maximum demand. (for consumer > 1 year, average MD recorded for 1 year will be used as
MD. For consumer < 1 year, declare MD will be used).
BOUNDARY

 No change to existing boundary

 Ownership
 Operation
Operational Requirements
1. Anti-islanding
Purpose: RE plant is to be automatically disconnected from TNB
network following any fault on TNB’s distribution system
(lost of mains). This is to ensure operational safety due to
risk of back-energisation and out-of-phase switching by
TNB

i. RE Plant is to be automatically electrically disconnected

from all TNB’s system.
ii. As such, the RE power plant has to be equipped with
appropriate protection schemes to detect loss of supply.
iii. DG units have to be able to isolate themselves within 2
seconds.
iv. Scheme of protection and settings need to be submitted
to TNB for review and approval
Operational Requirements
2. Synchronization point and procedure
Purpose : RE plant is to be reconnected after parameters at grid and
generators have been synchronised

i. The point of synchronization to TNB’s system shall be located

on the generator side. TNB shall not have any facility for
synchronizing with the RE plant operating in an islanded mode.
Appropriate interlocking scheme is to be put in place to ensure
that operation of PCC could be done safely.

ii. Following a system failure, re-synchronizing by RE to TNB’s

system shall only proceed once the system is restored to the
normal state. Reconnection shall only be done after TNB
supply is stabilised.
iii. For inverter based generations, inverters are to be reconnected
after 5 minutes of TNB network restored for MV and 2 minutes
of TNB network restored for LV
