Jewish students in Baghdad founded the first Zionist pioneer youth group in Iraq )1933-1929( ‫جماعة أحيعيبر‬
in the wake of the anti-Jewish riots and pogroms which took place in Palestine
in 1929. Known as Ahiever, the group was dedicated to the dissemination of ‫בעקבות מאורעות תרפ"ט בארץ ישראל הקים הנוער היהודי הלומד בבגדאד‬
Hebrew books.The Ahiever Group promoted knowledge of the Hebrew language, – ‫ היא "אחיעבר‬,‫את קבוצת הנוער הציונית החלוצית הראשונה בעיראק‬
organized evening classes, distributed books and journals from Palestine, and ‫ידי‬-‫ "אחיעבר" הפיצה את השפה העברית על‬."‫קבוצת מפיצי הספר העברי‬
published its own Hebrew newsletter, Shemesh. Ahiever also collected donations ‫ הפיצה ספרים ועיתונים ארצישראליים והוציאה לאור‬,‫שארגנה שעורי ערב‬
