Assignment 1: Vibrations

Attempt all problems manually in your own handwriting and in your own words on A4 size sheets.

Q1. A car having a mass of 1000 Kg. deflects its springs 4 cm under its load. Determine the natural
frequency of the car in vertical direction.

Q2. A steel wire (E=1.96e+11 N/m2) is of 2 mm diameter and is 30 m long. It is fixed at the upper
end and carries a mass M kg at its lower end. Find M so that the frequency of longitudinal
vibrations is 4 Hz.

Q3.For the system shown below write the equation of motion and find an expression for its
natural frequency.

Q4. For the system shown below write the equation of motion and find an expression for its
natural frequency.

Q5. Determine the torsional natural frequency of the system shown in the figure below. Neglect
the mass moment of inertia of the stepped shaft.

Q6. A light cantilever of rectangular cross section (5 cm deep by 2.5 cm wide) and of length 0.4
m has a mass 2 kg fixed at its free end. Find the natural frequency of free lateral vibrations in
vertical and horizontal planes.

Q7. Write the differential equation of motion for the system shown in the figure below and find
the natural frequency of damped vibrations and the damping ratio of the system.

Q8. A gun barrel of mass 600 Kg has a recoil spring of stiffness 300,000 N/m. If the barrel recoil
1.3 m on firing, determine,
a) The initial recoil velocity of the barrel
b) The critical damping coefficient of the dashpot which is engaged at the end of the recoil
stroke.
c) The time required for the barrel to return to a position 5 cm from the initial position.

(Hint: The barrel recoils on firing and it acts as an undamped spring-mass system. But in
the return stroke, a damper is also engaged and therefore it acts like a spring-mass-
dashpot system.)

Q9. The damped vibration record of a vehicle, which can be treated like a SDOF system, shows
the following data:
Amplitude on second cycle: 1.2 cm
Amplitude on third cycle: 1.05 cm
The effective mass and the stiffness of the vehicle can be taken as: k=7840000 N/m and M=2000
kg.
Determine the damping coefficient of the system assuming it to be viscous.

Q10. A 1000 Kg machine is acted upon by a force of amplitude 2450 N at a frequency of 1500
RPM generated due to machine’s operation. To reduce the effects of vibration, isolators of rubber
having a static deflection of 2 mm under the machine weight and an estimated damping factor
of 0.2 are used. Determine the amplitude of vibration of the machine and its phase lag. Also
determine the force transmitted to the foundation.

Q12. The figure shows a simplified model of a passenger car (with point G representing its center
of mass). Write equations of motion and determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes of
the natural modes of vibration with the following data.

Q11. A machine represented by a single degree of model with mass m and stiffness k is acted
upon by a an operational force F(t). It is required to control the vibration of the machine by adding
an auxiliary spring-mass system with mass and stiffness ma and ka as shown in the figure below.
a) Write equations of motion
b) Find natural frequencies and mode shapes of the combined system; sketch the mode
shapes
c) Show that by a proper choice or ‘tuning’ of the auxiliary spring-mass system properties it
is possible to reduce the amplitude of the machine to zero. What is the resulting tuning
condition?

The following questions is to be done in MATLAB

Q12. For the system in Q11 make a program in MATLAB to find and plot the steady state response
amplitude of the two masses as a function of the forcing excitation frequency varying from 0 Hz
to four times the second resonant frequency. Write your observations from the plots.
Use the following data:
