Terms of Reference

GENERAL INFORMATION
Duration: From September 2020 to July 2021
Location: UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, Harare, Zimbabwe
Organizational Unit: Social and Human Sciences Sector

BACKGROUND/SECTOR PROGRAMMES(Core areas of work)


UNESCO's Social and Human Sciences sector aims to develop and promote social
policies, which uphold peace, human rights, democratic governance and tolerance. To
achieve this goal, social policy activities must provide opportunities and empowerment
for all, particularly during this period of major social, political, economic and cultural
change.

In Southern Africa, the Social and Human Sciences Sector focuses on areas such as
Promoting youth development and civic engagement, social inclusion and disabilities,
and intercultural dialogue for peace, economic and social transformations, and human
rights. The Sector has supported activities on inclusive environments, citizen
participation, and intercultural dialogue, women and girls with disabilities, and
enhancing social science research on social transformations and strengthening national
social science policy and international scientific cooperation.

DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAINEESHIP


1. Assist the Social and Human Sciences team with website update, editing of articles as
well as office e-filing and archiving;
2. Assist with the organization of national and regional workshops and meetings related
to the Social Science Sector in the Regional Office;
3. Participate in meetings, workshops, conferences and other gatherings relevant to the
work of the project and sector and report to the Supervisor;
4. Support the production of visibility and communication materials for specific projects;
5. Assist in the development of concept notes by carrying out literature review and gap
analysis
6. Assisting in writing report and news flashes for the sector;

7. Assist in project proposal development.

8.Submit a report reflecting the 6 months internship with UNESCO Regional Office for
Southern Africa at the end of the internship.

9.Provide assistance with other project activities as requested

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Undergraduate student in 3rd year
Subjects: Social Sciences [Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Social Work, Development
Studies, Peace and Governance Studies, and Law]
Language skills: English (French and/or Portuguese an advantage)
Competencies and skills:
Written Communication skills
Analytical/critical thinking skills,
Interpersonal and teamwork skills,
Technical and research skills
Developed Computer flair
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
To expose the trainee to UNESCO programme/project implementation in the Social and
Human Sciences Sector focus areas, by developing:
 Technical and Research Skills: To expose the students to employ appropriate methods and
use relevant information technology in support of decision-making.
• Written Communication Skills: The trainee will be able to construct coherent written forms
of communication.
• Oral Communication Skills: The trainee will be able to compose and present effective oral
forms of communication.
• Analytical/Critical Thinking Skills: Students will be able to demonstrate analytical and
critical-thinking skills in the context of organizational decision-making.
• Interpersonal and Teamwork Skills: The trainee will be able to demonstrate effective
interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and
successfully in teams of diverse composition
