Terms of Reference
GENERAL INFORMATION
Duration: From September 2020 to July 2021
Location: UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, Harare, Zimbabwe
Organizational Unit: Social and Human Sciences Sector
Supervisor (name, title): Phinith Chanthalangsy, Programme Specialist
In Southern Africa, the Social and Human Sciences Sector focuses on areas such as
Promoting youth development and civic engagement, social inclusion and disabilities,
and intercultural dialogue for peace, economic and social transformations, and human
rights. The Sector has supported activities on inclusive environments, citizen
participation, and intercultural dialogue, women and girls with disabilities, and
enhancing social science research on social transformations and strengthening national
social science policy and international scientific cooperation.
8.Submit a report reflecting the 6 months internship with UNESCO Regional Office for
Southern Africa at the end of the internship.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Undergraduate student in 3rd year
Subjects: Social Sciences [Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, Social Work, Development
Studies, Peace and Governance Studies, and Law]
Language skills: English (French and/or Portuguese an advantage)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
To expose the trainee to UNESCO programme/project implementation in the Social and
Human Sciences Sector focus areas, by developing:
Technical and Research Skills: To expose the students to employ appropriate methods and
use relevant information technology in support of decision-making.
• Written Communication Skills: The trainee will be able to construct coherent written forms
of communication.
• Oral Communication Skills: The trainee will be able to compose and present effective oral
forms of communication.
• Analytical/Critical Thinking Skills: Students will be able to demonstrate analytical and
critical-thinking skills in the context of organizational decision-making.
• Interpersonal and Teamwork Skills: The trainee will be able to demonstrate effective
interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and
successfully in teams of diverse composition
