BASIC SKILLS IN BASKETBALL

1. DRIBBLING-
Learning how to dribble a basketball is usually the very first skill a player will learn.
It’s easy enough to bounce the ball up and down while standing still…
But when a player’s trying to figure out how to:
 Keep their head up to see teammates.
 Move around the court.
 Protect the ball from the defense.
Then learning how to dribble a basketball can be intimidating. But there’s good news…

Practicing your dribbling and ball-handling skills requires only two things:
 A basketball
 A small area to dribble.
You don’t need a basketball hoop, a teammate to pass you the ball, or a fancy basketball gym with perfectly polished
hardwood floors.
In the steps below, I’ll teach you the best way to dribble a basketball and also give you several dribbling drills to practice as
well.

Let’s get started…

HOW IS IT BEING DONE?

 Spread and Relax Your Fingers
 Use Your Fingertips For Control
 Get Your Body Down Low
 Pound the Basketball into the Floor
 Protect the Basketball From the Opponent
 Keep Your Eyes Up to See the Floor

2. PASSING is a fundamental skill youth players should practice regularly because it's the foundation upon which every
good offense is built. Teams that rely solely on individual players dribbling around the court will find it difficult to score many
points against a good defensive team.

HOW IS IT BEING DONE?

 Place hands on the sides of the ball, fingers spread, with thumbs facing up.
 Keep elbows loose and at sides
 As arms extend, the palms rotate naturally outward and the thumbs rotate downward, causing ball to spin
backwards as it flies.
 Step in the direction of the target, extending legs, back, and arms.
 Force wrists "through" the ball. The strong hand tends to dominate, so emphasize forcing the weak hand through
the ball.
 Ball goes where the fingers direct it. Releasing it off the first and second fingers of both hands provides backspin
and gives the ball direction.
 Follow through by pointing fingers at the target with palms facing down.

3. SHOOTING
Good basketball shooting technique doesn't develop overnight. It takes years to complete the number of repetitions
required to embed the proper shot mechanics into the body's muscle memory.
If you can capture the shooter from different angles (from the front, back, and both sides), you'll get a complete picture of
what his basketball shooting form looks like from start to finish.

HOW IS IT BEING DONE?

 Feet shoulder-width apart and toes pointing straight toward basket

 Ball brought in a straight line from shooting pocket to cocked position above forehead
 Body squared up to basket; shoulders, hips, knees, and feet all facing basket
 Shooting elbow kept close to body during shot
 Eyes on target entire time
 On follow through, fingers of shooting hand point down while fingers of balance hand point up.
 Follow through held for at least a second
 Non-shooting hand doesn't rotate or push ball on release
