ICT Transforming 21st Century Education

Integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education is an important

step in changing educational systems in the 21st century into modernized ones. Schools use diverse
set of ICT tools to communicate, create, disseminate, store, and manage information (Enyedy, 2014).
Commonly, students use ICT to collaborate with each other on projects, to get reminded about
upcoming assignments and tests, and to take photos and videos of the topics or lessons discussed.
They are using mobile apps to organize their schoolwork, check on grades, take notes in class and
learn about school activities. On the other side, teachers use ICT to do further research about their
lesson, to present their lesson, to have discussions in the online classes and even use it in computing
grades.

Generally, ICT familiarize students and teachers with the use and purpose of computers,
related social and ethical issues. I agree that through this, both teachers and learners can be
empowered. ICT does not only transform teaching but also transforms the learning processes.
When teachers are digitally literate and are trained to use ICT, these approaches can lead to higher
order thinking skills, provide creative and individualized options for students to express their
understandings, and leave students better prepared to deal with ongoing technological change in
society and on the workplace (Goodwin, 2012).

Today, students have a clearer vision on how technology, such as mobile devices in
particular, can transform their learning process. That vision focuses on a new school paradigm that
takes advantage of the collective advancements in technology to create more personalized learning
environments. As outlined in the Speak Up 2011 national reports, (a national research project), many
emerging technology products and services are not only addressing and providing instructional
needs, but are also enabling greater personalization of the learning process, both in school and out of
school. Within this context, the use of mobile devices such as tablet, computers and smartphones
combined with wireless accessibility and social media tools stand out increasingly as a game changer
in this movement to more personalized learning in the 21st century education (Project Tomorrow.
2012). It mpowers students to engage in the learning process and give them an interest and have
the ability to learn more effectively and collaboratively with each other.

Since we are living in the digital era, we - students must utilize the tools that are found in
our world today and be prepared to use these tools for tomorrow. The social media, online classes,
mobile devices and other tools will surely help us become global communicators, digital learners and
be able to adapt to the rapidly changing world of technology.
