ICT in Education
As we welcome and embrace the 21 st century learning, ICT should be keenly observed
and practiced as it transforms student learning and teaching by promoting change, empowering the
learning process and extending bigger possibilities.
ICT promotes change to education. It plays a vital role in changing and modernizing
educational systems. From traditional teaching methods, teachers can now shift to a better and faster
mode of teaching by integrating ICT. It gives educators the opportunity to transform the way
learning happens by presenting a wide range of tools that he or she can use to present as part of his or
her lesson. Students can now grasp a fresh and different information from different technological
tools and instructional materials. This kind of transformation increases learning as it provides
learners an opportunity to develop creativity, communication and thinking skills. However, others
claim that too much dependency from ICT reduces the teacher and student’s competency for learning
as it gives more emphasis in just presenting the lesson, rather than understanding it. I disagree with
this idea knowing that ICT doesn’t function as just a display during class discussions. ICT is way
useful than that. It lets you explore new knowledge while enjoying at the same time. It lets you get
out of the conventional teaching methods where most students are less exposed to the new
technology.
ICT empowers the learning process. While students are learning different new things
everyday by using various technological resources such as computers, ICT offers them a chance to
engage and gain interest in their personal education. They can have the freedom to choose how can
they learn things because ICT presents online tutorials and online classes for students who want
educational convenience. This became a bridge to save more time in doing work without time limit.
But then again, some people assert that continuing this kind of privilege will only make the students
feel lazy to attend the actual class. Yes, they might have a point but then again, let us be reminded
that ICT is just a mean for faster delivery of information. Students might get tired to attend the actual
class but as long as they are still learning from the online tutorials they watch and online classes they
attend, it won’t affect the effectiveness of ICT in education.
ICT extends the possibilities of learning. As ICT innovates the value of e-learning, students
upgrade from their lowest potential to their highest potential. ICT lets them experiment and explore
their potency by showing their skills and talents. Since learning doesn’t just exist in a four-cornered
room, ICT helps students develop themselves by sharing what they possessed in different social
media platforms. By doing this, teachers can identify the abilities of their students. On the contrary,
other people claim that this would only neglect the meaning of education, it would only lessen their
time to study and too much exposure in the social media would affect their performance
academically. To set things straight, ICT provides learning mixed with fun. It lets every student build
their confidence rather than suffocate them.
A learning environment with ICT is greatly needed to transform student learning and
teaching. E-learning must be integrated to easily communicate, share ideas and access the new world
of knowledge beyond classroom walls. Let that sink in.
