Lesson Plan in

Mathematics 7
(November 8, 2018. 10:00-12:00 nn)

I. Objective/s
 State and prove the product, power, and quotient rule for exponents.
 Solve a product, and quotient problem using exponents.
 Enjoy solving base and exponential problem.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Base and Exponents
Reference: E-MATH 7, pp. 240-250
Materials: Manila paper, cartolina, chalk, green board
Value Focus: Cooperation

III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity
A. Introduction
1. Opening Prayer
Please all stand and let us pray. A student will lead the prayer
Mr./Mrs.____________ can you
please lead the prayer.
2. Greeting Good morning ma’am!
Good morning class
3. Classroom management
Kindly pick up the pieces of paper The students will follow
under your chairs and arrange it
properly and you may take your seats.
4. Checking of Attendance None ma’am!
Is there anyone absent today?
5. Review
Subtract the following expression. Students answer the problem on the board.
1.) (5x+4) – (7x+2)=-2x+2
2.) (10 x 2-4x+9)-(6 x 2+ x−6)=4 x2 −5 x +15

B. Motivation
Before we start our lesson, I will present to
you a song then we’ll sing it together. The students listen to the song and then sing
it.
“The Law of Exponents Song”

The Laws of Exponents,

Go like this, Go like this, Go like this
The Laws of Exponents
Go like this, All day long.

When adding like bases,

You combine like terms
Combine like terms, Combine like terms.
When adding like bases,
You combine like terms,
All day long.
When multiplying like bases
You add the exponents
Add the exponents, add the exponents
When multiplying like bases,
You add the exponents, All day long.

When dividing like bases,

You subtract the exponents
Subtract the exponents, Subtract the
exponents.
When dividing like bases,
You subtract the exponents, All day long.

With a power to a power,

You multiply exponents
Multiply exponents, multiply exponents
With a power to a power.
You multiply exponents, All day long.

With negative power make it positive and

Positive and
Positive and
With negative power make it positive and
Move it up or down.

Any base with zero power

Is equal to 1,
Equal to 1, Equal to 1.
Any base with zero power is equal to 1.
All day long.

And now you know the

Laws of Exponents,
Laws of Exponents,
Laws of Exponents,
And now you know the
Laws of Exponents,
And you’re ready for the test.

C. DISCUSSION
Today we will discuss about Bases and
Exponents.

Natural Number Exponents

In the expression x n, x is called the base and Students listen attentively.
n is called exponents. The whole expression
is called the nth power of x.

An exponent, which is a natural number, tells

how many times its base is to be used as a
factor.

Example: 4 1=4, 4 2=4 × 4 , 53=5x5x5=125

Solve:
1.) 9x9x9x9x9=95 Students solve the problem on the board
2) 8 4=8x8x8x8

Product Rule for Exponents

If m and n are natural numbers, then Students listen attentively.
x m × x n=x m+ n
In words, to multiply two exponential
expressions with the same base, keep the
base and add the exponents.

Example: 1. ¿ 23 ×25 =¿
(2*2*2)+(2*2*2*2*2)=28
2.)( 9 b 3 )( 3 b6 )=27 b9

Solve: 1. ¿ ( a7 ∙ a2 )=a9 Students solve the problem on the board

1 4
( )
2. c ( 16 c ) =4 c
4
4 8

Power Rule for Exponents

If m and n are natural numbers, then Students listen attentively.
n
( x m ) =xmn
In words, to raise an exponential expression
to a power, keep the base and multiply the
exponents.
5
Example: 1. ¿ ( 22 ) =210
2.) ( 5 x )3 =15 x3

Solve:
8
1.) ( a 7 ) =a 56 Students solve the problem on the board
3 2 6
1 1
2.)
[( ) ] ( )
3
=
3

Quotient Rule for Exponents

If m and n are natural numbers, and m>n and
x≠0, then Students listen attentively.
xm m −n
n
=x
x
In words, to divide exponential expressions
with the same base, keep the base and
subtract the exponents.
65 2 4 a4 ∙ a3 2
Example: 1.) 3 =6 2.) 5
=4 a
6 a

Solve:
b3 ∙10 b 8 Students solve the problem on the board
1.) (
11
b 5
=10 b 6 )
7 5
2.) 6 =7
7
9 h3 ∙ 4 h4
3.) =3 h
12h 6

D. Generalization

Give the rule and their meaning for the

following: 1. Product Rule for Exponents
1.) x m × x n=x mn 2. Power Rule for Exponent
8
2.) ( a 7 ) =a 56 3. Quotient Rule for Exponents
27
3.) 4 =23
