COASTAL DEPARTMENT STORES TO TAKE ON THE JORDAN’S NAME

AFTER ACQUISITION OF PUTNAM COMPANY

Coastal Department Stores, Inc., one of the nation’s leading retailers is acquiring Putnam
Company, the owner and operator of Jordan’s department stores, one of the country’s oldest
and most well-known retailers. Coastal Department Stores will take control of all Jordan’s, and
all current Coastal stores will take on the Jordan’s name.

“Some of Coastal’s department stores have strong brand recognition and loyalty, so there’s real
concern about changing the name, and helping customers see that the quality and service
they’re used to won’t change. In fact, it stands to improve with the strength of the Jordan’s name
and brand” said Sally Smith, a leading representative of Coastal Stores.

All current Coastal stores will become Jordan’s within a year, and the merchandise in each store
is being revamped. There will be more emphasis on women’s and men’s clothing and fashion,
and bringing in more designer and high end brands.

“Coastal’s and Jordan’s research has been showing that there is a fairly sizeable customer base
who come into the stores and want to see more selection in clothing and cosmetics, not just
their store brands and a designer name here or there, but more designer labels like Calvin Klein
and Kenneth Cole for men, and Donna Karan for women. Everyone sees this as an opportunity
to go more ‘up market’ and create a more upscale image for Jordan’s” said Smith.

Along with their well known locations, Coastal will be acquiring Putnam’s recently opened
Jordan’s stores in the South and West, extending Coastal’s brand further across the nation.
