Being a Virtual Marketing and Communications Associate Intern for the Worcester State

University Career Services Department has allowed me to expand on my communications and

marketing knowledge, and offered me a base to build upon professionally after the internship is

over. It's allowed me to move beyond my past professional social media marketing experiences,

and move more towards other forms of professional communications. This internship experience

has made me more well-rounded and has better prepared me, both personally and professionally,

for postgraduate opportunities. I've really enjoyed this experience, and would recommend the

Career Services Department internship to any communication student on campus.

At the beginning of the internship, the goals I set for myself were to try and gain as much

from the experience as possible, and to learn more about aspects of communications I didn't have

any previous professional experience in. These were also the goals my supervisors and I agreed

upon, and I think these goals have been achieved. Throughout my internship, I've gained

experience gathering research for marketing materials, learning how to write for

communications, interviewing and communicating with students on behalf of the organization,

and preparing marketing content. I've learned both professional and interpersonal

communications skills throughout this experience, and it has already paid off. Now, I am able to

put these new skills on my resume, and I've gained interviews for positions I don't think I would

have been qualified for otherwise.

This internship has also affected me personally, and taught me about being more

confident in the workplace. While I've been able to be creative before, this has given me much

more confidence when contributing my ideas, and it's been amazing when those ideas are the

ones that end up being used by the department. It's also given me the confidence to allow myself

to be vulnerable enough to seek help and advice. Sometimes, I find it difficult to go outside my
comfort zone and ask for help. Throughout this experience though, I've learned how important it

is to take advantage of the services and advice offered from the people around me. This

internship went beyond just learning about communications and marketing projects, and also

required me to complete a resume review, cover letter review, and mock interview. I don't think I

ever would have gone to Career Services work on those things if I hadn't been required too, but I

am very glad I did. Now, I've been able to apply and interview for jobs with confidence.

Completing these requirements for the internship right as I was beginning my job search

felt like perfect timing, and I think these should be requirements for all internships, if not for all

majors. I feel like a lot of students, like myself, wouldn't have been comfortable enough to go

ask for career advice. Instead, they just try and stick it out on their own, but I've learned that is

what Career Services is for. While I felt very insecure having my colleagues, who I've gotten to

know over the last few months, go over my resume and cover letters, I know it was worth it.

Now, as I enter the professional world, I will be less afraid of uncomfortable experiences

because I know they will better me in the long run.

At the beginning of this internship, I knew I would learn at least something from this

experience, but the Career Services department has exceeded my expectations. As I previously

stated, I got much more out of it than just professional communications knowledge. I wanted to

apply my knowledge and test out what I've learned academically in a professional environment,

and this opportunity has allowed me to do that. I felt like my colleagues truly wanted to better

prepare me for my future, and it was an amazing experience that I would definitely recommend

to other students. Before this internship, I felt very set on my post graduate future being in social

media marketing. Now, I'm much more open to other possibilities. I've become more interested

in email marketing, internal communications, and copywriting. I've taken in so much information
that has prepared me for many different paths, and I'm excited to apply the knowledge I've

gained this semester to future opportunities.
