Hari Raya Celebrations

Every year, after one month of fasting, Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Puasa. All
Muslims celebrate the day with great joy. In the morning, they go to the mosque
to pray. Then, on returning home, they receive guests and relatives.

Days before, they make many varieties of cakes, cookies and sweet meats.
They also cook 'rendang' curries to go with the 'ketupat'. Homes are decorated with
many coloured lights all over the garden.

Boys and girls wear new clothes and shoes. Girls wear jewellery and boys
new 'songkoks'.

Many, however, go back to their village to celebrate the festival with their

parents. It is also a time for family reunions. Everyone rejoices during this festive
season.

A Robbery I Saw

One morning, I was walking along a street. Suddenly, I saw some robbers. I
stopped at once to see what they were doing.

The robbers attacked a hawker. The hawker had a lot of money in his bag.
The robbers took all the hawker’s money and ran away.

The poor hawker shouted for help. No one cared to listen to him. Everyone
was afraid. I was also afraid to do anything to help him.

The hawker now began to cry loudly. In a short while, the police came. The
hawker told the police what had happened.

The hawker then slowly went away, with tears in his eyes. I felt very sorry
for him. The police too were very unhappy.
