INTRODUCTION

NARRATIVE TEXT

Definition

A narrative text is a text which tells a story. The story can be the imaginary or based on
the true story.

Communicative Purpose

The basic purpose of narrative is to entertain, to gain and hold a readers' interest.
However narratives can also be written to teach or inform, to change attitudes / social
opinions. Narratives sequence people/characters in time and place but differ from
recounts in that through the sequencing, the stories set up one or more problems, which
must eventually find a way to be resolved. The common structure or basic plan of
narrative text is known as the "story grammar."

Types of Narrative

There are many types of narrative. They can be imaginary, factual or a


combination of both. They may include fairy stories, mysteries, science fiction,
romances, horror stories, adventure stories, fables, myths and legends, historical
narratives, ballads, slice of life, personal experience.

Structure

In a Traditional Narrative the focus of the text is on a series of actions.

 Orientation (introduction):

Present the setting of the story and introduce the characters. In which the characters,
setting and time of the story are established. Usually answers who? When? Where?.

 Complication or problem:

The complication usually involves the main characters (often mirroring the
complications in real life).

 Resolution:

There needs to be a resolution of the complication. The complication may be resolved


for better or worse/happily or unhappily. Sometimes there are a number of
complications that have to be resolved. These add and sustain interest and suspense for
the reader.

Narrative I

THREE FISH

Once three fish lived in a pond. One evening, some fishermen passed by the pond and
Orientation saw the fish. ‘This pond is full of fish’, they told each other excitedly. ‘we have never
fished here before. We must come back tomorrow morning with our nets and catch these
fish!’ So saying, the fishermen left.

When the eldest of the three fish heard this, he was troubled. He called the other fish
together and said, ‘Did you hear what the fishermen said? We must leave this pond at

once. The fishermen will return tomorrow and kill us all!’ The second of the three fish
agreed. ‘You are right’, he said. ‘We must leave the pond.’

But the youngest fish laughed. ‘You are worrying without reason’, he said. ‘We have

lived in this pond all our lives, and no fisherman has ever come here. Why should these
men return? I am not going anywhere – my luck will keep me safe’.

The eldest of the fish left the pond that very evening with his entire family. The second
Complication fish saw the fishermen coming in the distance early next morning and left the pond at
once with all his family. The third fish refused to leave even then.

Resolution The fishermen arrived and caught all the fish left in the pond. The third fish’s luck did
not help him – he was caught and killed.

Narrative II

THE FOX AND THE GOAT

Introduction One day there is a fox walk along in the forest to look for food.

A fox fell into a well and couldn’t get out. By and by a thirsty goat came along. Seeing
the fox in the well it asked if the water was good. “Good”, said the fox “It’s the best
Complication water I’ve tasted in all my life. Come down and try it yourself.” The goat was thirsty so
he got into the well. When he had drunk enough, he looked around but there was no way
to get out.

Then the fox said, “I have a good idea. You stand on your hind legs and put your

Resolution forelegs against the side of the well. Then I’ll climb on your back, from there. I’ll step
on your horns, and I can get out. And when I’m out, I’ll help you out of the well. The
goat did as he was asked and the fox got on his back and climbed out of the well. Then
he coolly walked away.

The goat called out loudly after him and reminded him of his promise to help him out.
Complication
The fox merely turned to him and said; “If you only had thought carefully about getting
out, you wouldn’t have jumped into the well.”

Resolution The goat felt very sad. He called out loudly. An old man walking nearby heard him and
put a plank into the well. The goat got out and thanked the old man.

Narrative III

LION AND TIGER

One day in the hot humid afternoon in the middle of the a jungle near a deep
Orentation river sat two good friends. Lion and tiger had just sat down by the edge of the great
river. They each put a wiggly worm on the end of their pole.

First lion cast his line far across the river. Plop went the bobber as it hit the
water. Tiger cast his line near to lion’s. Before very long lion felt a tug-tug-tug on his

Complication line. He yelled, “I’ve caught one!” he pulled his pole up hard. At the end of the line was
a new kind of fish.“ well, look at that, “ said lion. “I caught a boot fish.” And he plopped
his catch into the basket. Shortly after, nibble went tiger’s line. “ yahoo ! I’ve got one,
too!” yelled tiger. Tiger reeled in his line slowly so his catch would not get away. Tiger
caught a wonderful black tire fish. Tiger threw his prize catch into the basket with the
boot fish. Lion said as he smacked his lips hungrily, “I can almost taste those fish now.”

Tiger and lion fished until late in the day when the sun began to hide behind the
trees. “what a good day for fishing,” said lion. Tiger agreed. Lion and tiger gathered
Resolution their poles, bait and basket full of fish. They had caught three fish. Lion was proud of
his catch. Tiger happy that he had something for supper, too. In the basket were a boot
fish, a black tire fish, two shiny tin can fish, a lunch box eel and a seaweed serpent. Lion
and tiger happily skipped down their path to their home. They had a splendid fishy feast
that night.

MY STORY
IF YOU DIE WITH ME

At one particular day in a place residing in forest hinterland, lived a decrepit


grandmother and grandfather. They lived both only on the ground, although they have
been married for 30 years, they got children. Nevertheless they lived very happy and
equipped each other within reason figure in story of Romeo and Juliet, what always
equip one another.

At one particular day, disease stroke final is the recurrence grandmother.


Grandfather very worry with the the circumstance he try to heal the the grandmother,
grandfather to and fro incoming exit of forest to look for the drug crop which can heal
the grandmother. The grandmother have surrendered with its circumstance, he assume if
it’s doom have before very eyes, he enquire to grandfather. “grandfather if I death, will
you also die with me, because if I die, I will alone in grave what you will accompanies
me ?”. Grandfather even also enquire to return “how to do that ?”. “that easy in kitchen
there is just mouse poison, drink that poison and we will die together.” say of the
grandmother. “But grandmother, although my love is very big to you, I don’t want to die
just to accompanies you in grave, and especially dead by like that”, say of the
grandfather. “Why?, what you wish to see alone there,” Ask the grandmother.
Grandfather reply “the Allah hate one who suicide hence, I will not do that matter
although we will the death together and our body together, but our soul will not meet in
heaven, grandmother will surely enter the heaven, if me differ with you, I will enter to
the hell, what grandmother have the heart to to see grandfather in hell,?” grandmother
kept quiet.

After very long debate, grandmother finally understand. And after few days ill
grandmother, finally she die, grandfather lugbrious with the grandmother’s departure.
Although, grandfather not accompanies grandmother in grave nature, grandfather still
deflect to deliver the its love greeting pass the prayer which he read off to grandmother
every night. Grandmother like and calm in nature I bury it because in enlightened by
prayer from the grandfather.

CONCLUSION
Possible the heaviest matter in doing this assignment is the nature of laziness was
so difficult for me to eliminate, another dissimilar barrier was the computer is often
being used by my elder brother, and or my mother, I have to give in because they are
older than me. But finally I could finish my assignment. Apologize if there is mistake.
