The opening shot is a wide shot/worms-eye of a bank, shortly followed by a red car slowly coming into view. This sets the scene for the audience and could suggest that perhaps these two things will be important, as they are the first things that we see right at the start of this movie. It has been filmed at a low angle, which may be because these things are supposed to be viewed as something big and looks as if something important is going to happen including this building. The car coming into view connotes that the building and the car are linked, as we see them in the same shot straight after one another. Then, an extreme close-up shot of Baby’s iPod comes in frame with the song ‘Bellbottoms’ playing in his headphones. This is the song that plays throughout the duration of the scene. This is important because each shot and each action is in time with the music. This song is also very fast paced, so from this we can understand that the scene is going to be very quick and dramatic.
Next, there is a medium close-up of each of the
characters in the car in time with each beat. They all have the same amount of time in these shots, which could mean they are all just as important as each other. However, they are all wearing sunglasses, which connotes they are all ‘cool’, or it could be a disguise, because their eyes are shielded. There is then a mid-shot of them getting out of the car at the same time, still on beat with the music, and getting something out of the boot and walk towards the bank we saw right at the start. The mid shot shows us the background, but enough to focus on the character’s movement. The fact that they are in time with each other seems very robotic and may imply that they are very serious characters. There is then a wide shot of the three characters walking across the street towards the bank and putting on a mask to disguise themselves. However, when they have all left, we get a minute long clip of Baby dancing and singing along to the song that plays in this scene. In this part of the scene, there are a lot of arc shots of Baby. There are also mid shots, medium full shots, close-ups, etc. The connotations of Baby getting more screen time than everybody else so early on in the film may be because he is the main character/a more important character than everyone. We also get a chance to see what kind of character he is, which seems to be an energetic and happy character, meanwhile the 3 others seemed more robotic and didn’t say a word.
MUSIC VIDEO: Motion Sickness – Phoebe Bridgers
The video stars off with a mid-long shot in the mirror with Phoebe sitting on the bed. This then pans from the mirror, to the bed showing a mid shot of her. She then starts singing, with a blank expression on her face whilst there is an arc shot semi-circling around her. Since the lyrics start off saying ‘I hate you for what you did’, her face is very blank and expressionless implying that the lyrics are supposed to be interpreted this way. The colours in this scene are also very monochromatic. In one continuous shot, she gets up from the bed, and starts slowly backing towards the door. Once she’s walked out the door, there is a close-up shot of her outside putting on a helmet. The lighting, still monochromatic and only one colour, has changed, and it has become a lot brighter. Once she’s put the helmet on, the camera pans out into a mid shot and shows her standing whilst putting on sunglasses and grabbing a scooter. She then walks away and the camera follows her. There is then a cut, and she is shown riding the scooter in a long shot whilst she gets closer to the camera. This then turns into a mid-long shot. Meanwhile, the colours are still monochromatic; it isn’t very captivating and quite boring to look at. There’s then an extreme long shot of her on the scooter. The sun has started setting at this point, so the colours are very pastel purple & white and the streetlights are starting to turn on. The same sort of shot consisting of her riding around with a mid-long shot continues for about 40 seconds whilst she is singing. Then, when the second chorus begins, the scene completely changes, and she is in a club/bar looking place, with neon lights. The first colour we see is blue, which could indicate sadness, referencing to the beginning with the monochromatic colours. It starts off with a mid shot of her walking in, and the camera follows her while she walks into the next room, which is red. Then, a mid-long shot into a mid shot shows her walking up to a mirror and taking off her blazer. TV SHOW: Doctor Who The scene starts off with a close-up of The Doctor’s face, when he seems to be in pain, and immediately the camera cuts away into a mid-long shot of him limping slowly. He is in a dark alleyway, which could suggest this scene is dark and going to be somewhat scary. Also, because the first thing we saw was him in pain, this connotes that something bad may happen to The Doctor. There is then another brief close-up of The Doctor before we get a landscape of what he sees in front of him (a blurry shot of the Tardis). The perspective we see is from The Doctor, which is a handheld camera, making it very shaky. There also is a blur effect, so it could connote that he is feeling ill/sick. There is then an extreme long shot of The Doctor limping towards the Tardis in the snow. There are a series of close-up shots and mid shots of The Doctor’s distressed face in very fast paced clips to emphasize the drama in this scene. After this buildup of fast clips, there is a single close-up shot of The Doctor’s face, he seems to still be in pain. As the audience, we may begin to feel bad for him, as we can see how much it is distressing him. Then, a long shot of Ood is shown, standing looking at The Doctor. After a short montage of clips, Doctor stands up and starts to shuffle towards the Tardis. Whilst he is walking, a close-up of his face is shown, where he looks almost heroic and proud, yet he may also still be in pain from the beginning. Once he reaches the Tardis and has shut the door behind him, there’s a close-up of the Doctor taking a breath and looking across the room. He walks towards the middle of the Tardis, with a mid-shot showing this, as he takes off his blazer. His eye contact hasn’t broken which connotes he is feeling confident/brave. He throws his blazer across the floor, as an extreme long shot shows this, and the music gets more intense, whereas before it was more subtle and quiet. This connotes that the scene is beginning to get more dramatic and something may be building up in this moment. Then, the Doctor looks at his hand (which starts glowing) in a mid close-up shot
