United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea
(UNCLOS)
• It is an international treaty which was adopted
and signed in 1982.
• It lays down a comprehensive regime of law and
order in the world's oceans and seas establishing
rules governing all uses of the oceans and their
resources.
• The Convention has created three new
institutions:
o International Tribunal for the Law of the
Sea,
o International Seabed Authority,
o Commission on the Limits of the Continental
Shelf.
• It has more than 160 member parties, including
