Social Butterflies

Man is a social animal (Aristotle) and by this, he loves to live in society with other human
beings. He cannot live without society, if he does so, he is either beast or God. Man realizes his
goals, his existence in the society, he finds various necessities in society through which he can
attain the perfectness of the life. The society has a big role in fulfilling the man’s need for
companion. The very existence of man is wielded into the fabrics of society. Moreover, man
lives in society for his mental and intellectual development. Society preserves our culture and
transmits it to succeeding generations. It liberates our potentials as individuals and hones our
attitudes, beliefs and ideals.

As social beings, we communicate by sharing our ideas and thoughts to various people
may it be our friends, peers, family, loved ones etc. Communication is a way of life in a sense
that humans cannot live by their own. We communicate through verbal and non-verbal ways. It
is very essential to humans because it is a process which make people interact to one another
and share information and ideas. Communication is what binds people since it is a two-way
interaction which delivers information through shared meanings and shared knowledge. No
relationship was ever made without communication because it bridges the gaps between
individuals and groups through the flow of message or information and understanding between
them. Language on the other hand, play a crucial role in processing the transfer of information
and relationship building. It is a tool used for people to be able to communicate with others. It
allows people to interact with great precision. In all aspects of our lives we engage with resist,
reframe with the meanings available through language, and give meaning to every aspect of our
lives. Ideas and understanding available through language shape our practice in a variety of
ways in our daily interactions.

One of the many skills in communication is oral communication where it implies giving
thoughts through words of mouth. It includes individuals conversing with each other, may it be
direct conversation or telephonic conversation. Speeches, presentations, discussions and the
like are all forms of oral communication. It is generally recommended when the communication
matter is of temporary kind or where a direct interaction is required. Moreover, Face to face
communication such as through meetings, lectures, conferences, interviews, symposiums etc. is
significant so as to build rapport and trust.
Impromptu Speech or Speaking is one of the dimensions of communication. This kind of
public speaking is given with little or no preparation, yet almost always with some advance
knowledge on the topic. When called to speak on the “spur of the moment”, is usually because
of the fact that the speaker is quit knowledgeable about the subject. With this type of speech,
the speaker is generally in control of the content of what he is presenting, so he should include
topics that he wants to talk about. Additionally, he can also make use of personal examples and
experiences from various circumstances to support his notions. Commonly, the delivery of the
speaker will be natural like a conversational way but of course, it depends on the person’s level
of confidence and self-esteem. With Impromptu speeches, the speaker is most likely speak
directly to the audience assuming that he is talking to a specific person since he is not prepared
for any notes at hand. The speaker is always the “authority” on the topic and it is best to speak
with conviction and confidence so that the speaker can get the audience’s attention.

Personally, the idea of virtual impromptu speaking is new to me but I have lots of
experiences when it comes to public speaking since I really enjoy performing in front of a huge
number of audience and so, I think I was able to adapt with this new set up. I can proudly say
that this speech was the easiest speech that I have done in this class yet. As I was saying, I am
very good when it comes to sharing my thoughts about certain things especially the topics I
deeply know of and the topics that I really want to talk about. I know my capabilities when it
comes to public speaking that is why I think that I did a great job on the speech that we had in
the class. I reached the limit and I was able to share all of me and to was able to inspire people
with the talents I have and the goals I want to achieve in life.

Another dimension of communication that I have encountered in this class is Role

-playing. Role-playing is a valuable teaching and training platform where learners take on
different roles, assuming a profile of a character or personality and interact and participate in
diverse and complex learning settings. This can be very fun for students since it provides
excellent opportunities for using language in real life scenarios. By acting different situations, a
student can explore how other people are likely to respond to different approaches. One could
also sense what other people are likely to be thinking and feeling in a certain setting. Moreover,
doing role plays build experiences and self-confidence in handling situations in real life and one
can develop quick and well thought of ideas and reactions to situations.

For the past weeks of virtual learning, this is the first time I have experienced doing role
plays and I can say, it’s quite challenging not only with this set up but with the gap between me
and my partner. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed being able to show my talent in acting since I
think it is one of my fortes. Moreover, me and my partner were able to think creatively in
presenting our ideas with regards to miscommunication. Though there are lapses with our
performance due to technicalities, we were able to present our ideas and showcase our skills in
impersonating different races. All in all, I think that this was one of the best performances I have
done and I was able to end it with a bang.

To conclude, language and communication plays a vital role to us social beings because
it is a tool and a medium we use to be able to build relationships and express our ideas verbally
and non-verbally. The activities we had really honed our skills not only in the field of
communication but also being able to critically think under pressure and present well.
