A Too Busy to Bank?

Tim and Anne are both very busy at work. Tim has been working nights lately and Anne works
during the day. They hardly see each other, so they have been leaving notes like these:

Tim,
The bank manager called yesterday. He told me that someone had deposited a check into our
account on August 5th. He explained that another customer had used our bank account number by
mistake. He said he was calling to apologize. We need to cash our salary checks, too. You told me
you were too busy to go to the bank today. Would you like me to go?
Love you!
Anne

Anne,
My brother advised me to start doing our banking online. He said it was so much easier.
He told me that he checked his balance online every day. He saw all his deposits and
withdrawals on his online bank statement. In fact, he said that he only went to the bank
to cash checks or to see the manager face-to-face. He said he was going to come over
and explain online banking to us. Are you free tomorrow evening?

Reported Speech: Yes / No Questions

A To: Dave Moss

Subject: Foreign Money Exchange
I can’t wait to see you in July and to meet your girlfriend, Sally.
I wonder if you could answer some questions I have about changing money in the U.S.: Is there
a foreign money exchange near your house? Are the exchange rates the same in the U.S. as in
Spain? Have they gone up recently? Do you know how much the euro is worth? Does the bank
charge a commission for each transaction? Is it better to travel with traveler’s checks or cash?
Do I have to show any documents when I change money?
Paulo

To: Sally Jennings

Subject: Questions about Changing Money
My Spanish friend, Paulo, is coming to the U.S. in July and he asked me some questions about
foreign money exchange. I told him I didn’t know the answers but that I would ask you.
He asked me if there was a foreign money exchange nearby. Do you know of one? He wanted
to know whether the exchange rates were the same in the U.S. as in Spain, or whether they
had gone up. Paulo also asked me if I knew how much the euro was worth. Is it $5 to the euro
or less? He wanted to know if the bank charged a commission for each transaction. If so, how
much is the commission? Paulo asked me whether it was better to travel with traveler’s checks
or cash. What do you think? He also needed to know if he had to show any documents when he
changed money.
Thanks for the help,
Dave

Reported Speech – Wh- Questions

A Dear Mom and Dad,

Living in the city is so expensive. I asked Tim how we were going to pay all the bills every month
now that I am studying and only he is earning a salary. Tim suggested that we talk to a financial
advisor. We wanted to know how to budget our money better.
Sara, the financial advisor, asked us lots of questions. First, she inquired how much our monthly
expenses were. We had to give her specific information. She wanted to know how much we spent
every month on entertainment, rent, food, and clothing. She wondered why I spent so much on
clothing. I had no idea! Then she asked us who did the weekly and monthly budgets. Neither of us
wrote down our expenses! Sara said that it was important to figure out exactly how much we were
spending every month. This way, we would see where we could lower our expenses.
Sara also helped us with our banking. She wanted to know where we did our banking. She also
asked us who paid the bills and how we paid them. I told her I paid some bills by mail and others
online. She asked how much commission the credit card company took for each credit card
transaction. I didn’t know!
We are learning so much about budgeting! Maybe next month we’ll even be able to set some money
aside for a trip home to see you.
Lots of love,
Linda

Awful things have been happening to my friends lately.
First, my good friend Dave is in debt and is trying very hard to make ends meet. He told me
that he had to take a loan from the bank to pay for his studies last year. Now he owes the bank
$25,000! He asked me to lend him some money to help him get out of debt. I told him that
I would lend him what I had, but that it wasn’t enough to pay back the loan. I also asked Fred
to help Dave find a steady job.
Second, I received a call from Susan the other day. There was a fire in her house and it did a
lot of damage. Poor thing! She told me that she couldn’t pay anyone to fix up the house and
that she had to repair everything herself. She asked me to lend her a hammer and an electric
screwdriver. I told her that she should borrow all my tools. I said that they would all come in
