BRAKE PLATE COMBINATIONS
ALL FITTED WITH JCB AXLES FROM 1989 AND USING THE PART NUMBERS LISTED BELOW
JCB recommend and only supply the latest type friction and counter plates be used, as indicated in the last column of each
section (‘E’, ‘H’, ‘L’ & ‘P’). Replace complete axle sets. Previous friction and counter plate part numbers are given for information.
Parts are packed in set unit quantities. See parts book for specific axle quantities. Plates must not be mixed, use in sets as
bracketed below. See page 2 for further information.

1 For machines with inboard brakes dealer stock of A, B and C can be used providing the machine was originally
fitted with these parts and parts are only used in sets as bracketed.

Steps a and b identify the differences between the plates.

X
a Counter plates D, G, K and N can be identified by the deletion of the slots, as shown at
X. The new plates are also thicker, approximately 4 mm (0.160 in) thick compared to 3
mm (0.120 in).
Y
b Friction plates D, G, K and N can be identified by a larger surface area of friction facing,
and thinner steel plate construction Y. The steel plate is now approximately 2.5 mm thick compared to
approximately 3.5 mm with the older plate.
2 For machines with axle hub power brakes it is recommended that only the later type parts L and P are used to
provide optimum service life.

3 Instances have been reported of the new brake plate pack not fitting when the old pack has been discarded.
a To prevent this check that only parts bracketed together are used, plates E, H, L and P and previous D, G,
K and N have thicker friction material and thinner friction core but the overall pack thickness remains the
same.

b Ensure the brake piston is removed, cleaned, new seals fitted and is in the fully retracted position before
the new pack is fitted, see also 5/129 or 2/208 for assembly information only, use this bulletin for part
numbers.

4 The latest type counter plates E, H, L and P can be identified by the part number which is stamped on the side
of each plate, as shown at W. The new plates are the same thickness as the earlier plates D, G, K and N.

5 The latest type friction plates E, H, L and P can be identified by the part number which is stamped on the side of
each plate, as shown at V. The new plates are the same thickness as the earlier plates D, G, K and
N but have a revised friction material pattern as shown
at U.
V W
6 On assembly of brake packs, the oil flow holes Z in the U
new friction plates E, H, L and P must be aligned with
each other when being fitted to the brake plate carrier.

7 Use the correct oil, see MI 587/H, 520/HA, 531/E.
