Answer the following questions.

1. Define heat capacity and write its equation.

Answer: as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a given object by 1 kelvin.
equation: Q=mcΔT.

2. Define Specific heat and write its units.

Answer: is the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree Celsius.
Units: J kg-1 K-1.

3. Write the Specific heat for the following substance

I. Aluminum: 0.900
Ii. Copper: 0.385
III. Glass: 0.840
IV. Gold: 0.129
V. Lead: 0.160
VI. Silver: 0.240
VII. Tungsten: 0.134
VIII. Water: 4.184
IX. Mercury: 0.14

4. What is a Calorimeter draw a neat diagram.

calorimeter: is an object used for calorimetry, or the process of measuring the heat of chemical
reactions or physical changes as well as heat capacity.

Diagram:
5. Write and explain the principle of Calorimeter.

Answer: the body at higher temperature releases heat while the body at lower temperature absorbs
heat. The principle of calorimetry indicates the law of conservation energy, i.e. the total heat lost by the
hot body is equal to the total heat gained by the cold body.
6. Define Latent heat and show it graphically.

Answer: is energy released or absorbed, by a body or a thermodynamic system, during a constant-

temperature process — usually a first-order phase transition.

7. Define Latent heat of Fusion write its units.

Answer: is the change in its enthalpy resulting from providing energy, typically heat, to a specific
quantity of the substance to change its state from a solid to a liquid, at constant pressure.
Units: [J/kg].

8. Define Latent heat of Vaporization write its units.

ِAnswer: is a physical property of a substance, defined as the heat required to change one mole of liquid
at its boiling point under standard atmospheric pressure.
Units: kJ/kg, or J/g

9. Write the Melting and Boiling points of the following substances

I. Water: Boiling is 100 °C, Melting is 0 °C

II. Lead: Boiling is 1,749 °C, Melting is 327.5 °C
III. Aluminum: Boiling is 2,470 °C, Melting is 660.3 °C
IV. Silver: Boiling is 2,162 °C, Melting is 961.8 °C
V. Gold: Boiling is 2,700 °C, Melting is 1,064 °C
VI. Copper: Boiling is 2,562 °C, Melting is 1,085 °C

10. Define Conduction write and explain its equation.

Answer: is the movement of something such as heat or electricity through a medium or passage

11. Define Thermal Conductance write its units.

Answer: a measure of the ability of a material to transfer heat per unit time, given one-unit area of the
material and a temperature gradient through the thickness of the material.
Units: watts per

12. Define Thermal Resistance write its units.

Answer: is a heat property and a measurement of a temperature difference by which an object or

material resists a heat flow.
Units: kelvins per watt

13. Write the Thermal conductivity of the following substances. I.

14. Define Thermal Conviction.

Answer: involves heat transfer in a convective manner.

15. Define a Black body.

Answer: is a theoretically ideal radiator and absorber of energy at all electromagnetic wavelengths.

16. Define Thermal Radiation.

Answer: is electromagnetic radiation generated by the thermal motion of particles in matter.

17. Define Stefan Boltzmann law and derive its equation.

Answer: describes the power radiated from a black body in terms of its temperature.
