Section 3: Reading

My name is Valentina, and I’m a market researcher from Buenos Aires. My clients are some of the best-
known companies in the world. I’m responsible for gathering and analyzing data from public opinion
polls so that producers and retailers can improve their product development and marketing. Most of
them are also trying to improve their image and find ways to beat the competition. They hire my
company to help them. I’m very good at dealing with clients, but I don’t always like their products. Sure,
there are some that I could wholeheartedly recommend. For example, one of my customers is the
leading wine grower in my region, and I would give their wines a big thumbs-up. However, there are
other products that are so unhealthy or expensive that you couldn’t pay me to use them. But my clients
aren’t interested in my personal opinion. They just want me to write long reports on the results of my
research. I like my occupation, but sometimes I think it would be more interesting to be a “real”
scientist. For example, I would love to be involved in solving environmental issues or conducting
research on new sources of energy. My dream would be to work for the Iguazu Institute, which is hands
down the best research center in South America. But first I would need to save some money so that I
could go back to university and get my PhD.

14) What does Valentina write about her work? 15) What is Valentina’s goal for the future?
She writes that she __________. Her goal is to __________.

a) conducts interesting research on new sources a) study science and get a higher degree
of energy b) get her PhD at the Iguazu Institute
b) doesn’t work with companies who make c) do market research at the Iguazu Institute
unhealthy products d) get more clients and make more money
c) really loves writing long reports about her
research results
d) enjoys her job but doesn’t always like her
clients’ products

My name is Marie, and I work for the number-one newspaper in my region. I enjoy writing and editing
articles about local news, but the best part of my work is writing restaurant reviews. I’ve already eaten
at some of the best-known restaurants in the city. There are some that I could wholeheartedly
recommend, like Gino’s Café. They buy all their fruits and vegetables from local growers, and the food is
simply amazing. I gave them a big thumbs-up in my article, which they were really excited about.
However, I’ve also had many negative experiences. For example, at one restaurant, the food was so
salty that I couldn’t eat it, and at another, I had to wait two hours for my food to come, and then it was
cold. You couldn’t pay me to eat there again. I’m very honest about my experiences and tell my readers
to steer clear of restaurants with bad food or service. Therefore, I’m accustomed to receiving phone calls
from restaurant owners who are upset about the things I write. They complain when I influence public
opinion and hurt their image, but I think people should know which restaurants are good and which ones
they shouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole. My dream would be to travel the world and write restaurant
reviews for an international food magazine, like The Gourmet Fork. My parents wanted me to be a
scientist because I was always good at science in school. But I feel like, in my occupation, I do a lot of the
same things that researchers do. I gather information and analyze it. Instead of writing complicated
reports, I write articles that everyone can read and understand.

occupation? She would like to __________.
More than anything, she likes __________.
a) travel the world, writing about famous people
a) influencing public opinion with her articles b) go back to school and study to be a scientist
b) sharing her opinions about local places to eat c) start her own international food magazine
c) eating at the best restaurants in town for free d) write about restaurants in different countries
d) writing and editing articles about local news

Dear Crystal,
I’m sending you a link to a really nice article that I just read. It’s a beautiful story about an old man who
lost his home in a tornado. Every single house in his neighborhood was flattened. Thanks to the tornado
warning, he was able to leave his home in time. But he couldn’t find his cat, so he had to leave without
her. And when he returned, his cat was missing. It’s tragic enough to lose your home. But then he lost
his cat on the same day. Can you imagine? He must have been incredibly sad.
But fortunately, the story has a happy ending. After three months, a family in Manchester called and
told him they had found his missing cat. He answered, “That can’t be! I live 200 miles away from you!”
But it was true. The family had found her wandering around their neighborhood. The cat looked like it
hadn’t been fed for a while, so they took her to a vet. The vet found the address of the owner by
scanning the cat’s microchip. Without it, he couldn’t have found the man’s contact information.
I had never even heard that microchips for pets existed. After I read the article, I went straight to the vet
because I thought it would be worthwhile to get one for Sally. But the vet said that it’s utterly pointless if
she never leaves the house. However, I think it would be sensible for you to get one for Josie, because
she’s always running around outdoors.
Also, thanks for your advice about Hawaii. Maybe you’re right. It’s absolutely illogical to start planning
my honeymoon with Meg when we’re not even engaged yet. I tend to plan too much, and then I’m
disappointed when plans change.
Love,
Dennis

18) What is the article about? 19) Why did Dennis go to the vet?
The article is about __________. He went to the vet to get a microchip for his pet,
__________.
a) a film with a happy ending
b) someone who lost their pet a) Hawaii
c) a cat that died in a tornado b) Josie
d) a man who died in a tornado c) Meg
d) Sally

20) What advice did Crystal give Dennis?

She told him not to __________.

a) get a microchip
b) get engaged
c) plan a trip yet
d) be disappointed

Hi Urmila,
Thanks for the article you sent me about the company that started a wildfire by storing fireworks
outdoors. I didn’t even know that that factory existed. What a shame that every single house in the
neighborhood was burned to the ground! And I couldn’t agree with you more: They really shouldn’t be
allowed to store dangerous products outdoors when the weather is so dry and hot. It’s utterly ridiculous!
I can’t believe how the president of the company reacted as if it’s not a big deal. He just tried to argue
that the company is beneficial to the neighborhood because of all the jobs they’ve created. Doesn’t he
have any empathy? That’s totally shocking! He should lose his job, and the company should be closed
down. The article also said that the company pays really low wages. I hope more people read about them
and stop buying their fireworks.
It’s truly admirable how the local residents tried to help each other by collecting all the cats and dogs
that were wandering around in other neighborhoods after the fire.
Did you know that Renfield is very close to where Tim and I went on our honeymoon? We had such a nice
time there. They also have a great university. Those poor people! It’s really a tragedy that it happened
with no warning at all.
Thanks for telling me that Kate is engaged to Glen. That means she’s going to have four stepchildren! I
admire her strength.
See you soon!

My name is Laszlo, and I’m a researcher at Balaton Cola in Budapest. When I was younger, I knew I
wanted to be a scientist, but I always thought I would work at a university. I never realized that
companies need science, too. They employ researchers for developing new products, conducting tests,
and analyzing data. My company is the best-known producer of soft drinks in Eastern Europe. I first
started working here as an intern ten years ago. My managers noticed that I was good at working with
numbers, so they hired me. Now, I’m in charge of the whole research department. Soon, they are
sending me to one of our branch offices in Atlanta. I’m going to be responsible for setting up a new
research team there. I love Hungary, and I used to tell people that you couldn’t pay me to live in another
country. I’m not accustomed to traveling or speaking English every day. However, I’m starting to get
excited about going. My colleagues told me that I’m going to love all the different kinds of restaurants
with food from all over the world, but I know that I’m going to steer clear of fast food. Although my
occupation involves working with soft drinks all day, I am extremely health-conscious. I wouldn’t touch a
hamburger with a ten-foot pole. I guess if you deal with foods and nutrition all day, you start to take
your diet seriously.

14) Why is Laszlo moving to Atlanta? 15) Why was Laszlo hired by Balaton Cola?
