RATIONAL EQUATION

Word Problem
Samantha Marie FerrerABM - Humility
Jona, Kirk and Sam are working together to finish
the financial statement for their report. It takes them
two hours to finish the entire worksheets; Sam can
finish it in six hours if she works alone; Kirk can
finish it in four hours. How long it would take if
Jona will work by her own

The question that is ask in the problem is ‘How long it would take if
Jona will work by her own?’
Let j be the variable to represent Jonas time
1
j

Consider how much can be done in just one hour.

1
Sam can finish the financial statement by her own 6 and
1
Kirk in four hours 4
1 1 1 1
+ + =
6 4 j 2

1
Therefore, in one hour, Sam can finish 6 of the worksheets and Kirk can
1 1
finish 4 worksheets, and if they will work together, finish it 2 of their
project.

The common Denominator of (six, four and two) is 12; multiply both
sides, it will become
12 j 12 j 12 j 12 j
+ + =
6 4 j 2
2 j+3 j +12 j=6 j

Resulting 12, so Jona can finish the financial statement in 12 hours

in Manila. Kirk can drive one thousand five
hundred miles to Manila. On their way home the
Let K be the variable to represent the average going to Manila, k – 10
is for her average speed for the turn strip. The question that is ask in the
problem is what is the average speed of her driving going to Manila?
We are going to look for the difference between the longer time and
shorter time which is equal to 5
1500 1500
− =5
k−10 k

Multiply every side by k ( k −10 )

1500 1500
k ( k −10 ) −k ( k−10 ) =k ( k −10 ) 5
k−10 k

1500 k −1500 k ( k−10 )=5 k 2−50 k

15,000=5 k 2−50 k

Simplify – divide each side by 5

3,000=k 2−10 k

0=k 2−10 k−3000

Factor
( k +50 )( k −60 ) =0
k +50=0
k =−50
k −60=0
k =60
The average speed going to Manila is 60
