Immigration & Nativism Assignment Menu

Standards:
1) Students will understand different push and pull factors that caused Eastern and Southern Europeans
along with Asian Immigrants to come migrate to the U.S.
2) Students will understand the major legislation passed to limit the migration of these immigrants.
3) Students will understand Nativism and the impact it had on these different immigrant groups and the
lasting effects it had on American society.

Appetizers
(Pick 2)
• 1) Print out the first blank map of Europe. Use the textbook or the website listed at the bottom to color
and label your map. Only label Eastern and Southern Europe. Points will be lost if Western European
countries are included. Europe Map . Now print out the Asia map and follow the same instructions as
listed for the European Map. Only color China and Japan. If other Asian countries are labeled and
colored points will be lost. Asia: - Map
• 2) Make either a line or bar graph of the percentage of immigrants arriving at both Ellis and Angel
Island. Only make one graph that features both Islands. Remember to label your graph from 1860-1930.

• 3) Pick any immigrant group and research their journey coming to America. Eight sentences minimum
and points will be lost if there are less than eight. Include why they left home and what they expect to
gain in the U.S. How long was the ship ride, were there a lot of people, where did they sleep, was it
expensive to travel, was there enough food, did immigrants die making the journey, any diseases on
board, and did the ship make any stops to other countries or sail directly to the U.S. Also, were males
and females separated, did other immigrant groups make the same journey together, or how was
everyone able to communicate with each other? For research help go to page five.
Entrees

• 1) Create a travel brochure of America that would entice second wave immigrants to come to the U.S. Include factual pictures of
this time period, describe the economical opportunities, social aspects, & religious freedom. Include all the push factors and explain
why life in the U.S is better for these immigrants. Students have the option to make the brochure for all immigrant groups or to
target one group specifically.
• 2) Write a children’s book on any second wave immigrant coming to the U.S. Make sure to use historically accurate information and
answer why their immigrant migrated, who came with them, the ship ride, was life hard, where did they live or worked, and did
they have family over here already. This is your chance to be creative and tell a meaningful story. Remember to use simple
language and add a lot of pictures. The word comprehension skills of these children are 8 years old. If you chose to complete this
section let me know so I can show you how to convey a book on power point.
• 3) Watch a movie or documentary based on second wave immigration. After watching the movie or documentary, write a one-and-a-
half-page paper on the accuracy of the film. Does it correlate to what you learned in class? Did you learn anything new? The first
paragraph will introduce the movie and a brief summary of what happened. Then each following paragraph will be a review
inswing the accuracy, a character analysis, & etc. In the last paragraph you will state if you enjoyed the movie or would recommend
it to someone to watch. If you have any other movies you want to analyze feel free to ask me. List of movies and documentaries:
Island of Secret Memories: Angel Island Immigration Station. Ancestors in America part 1 or 2, Issei: The First Generation, Golden
Door, The Italian, The Immigrant, Heaven’s Gate, Stranger than Paradise, & The Jewish Experience : America.
• 4) Write one-page letter from an immigrant’s pov to his loved one over seas. Explain how he or she is feeling, where they live, how
life is, do they work, are they treated fairly, and etc. Be historically accurate and imagine you are the immigrant writing this letter.
Then write another one-page letter as the immigrant’s love one. Explain how they re feeling, how is life overseas, the economy and
government, and etc. These are letters between family members so make sure to use emotions.
• 5) On either google slides, Prezi, PowerPoint, or on a poster board- compare Ellis Island Versus Angel Island. State who arrived to
where, the immigration processing, include statistics, pictures, size of the facilities, and other important facts. Please give a
detailed analysis. For extra help look to Ellis Island Immigration Process Ellis Island and Angel Island Immigration

• 1) Pick any two political cartons and give a two- paragraph analysis on each of them. They cannot be based
on the same immigrant group. Include the message that is being conveyed, what are the stereotypes, any
emotional responses, the back lash this received, why was this created, are there any facts to this picture,
and where was this published.
• 2) On google slides, Prezi, or PowerPoint- state and describe immigration polices put into place to limit
immigration in the U.S. Include 3 or more polices. Answer who this affected, why this was created, what
where the positive and negative factors of this, did this change anything for the current immigrants
residing in the USA, and did all immigrants follow these laws. Please include pictures and videos.
• 3) Analyze and listen to one immigrant made song. Write a one-page paper explaining the importance of
music to them, what is the meaning of the song- look to the lyrics, think about why they continued to
praise their homeland and their culture. Why do you think these groups-built towns in certain states. For
example, China Town in San Francisco and Little Italy in New York. What was the purpose of
communities and keeping their lineage alive for generations. Drum Song of Fengyang
