Sarah is seventeen. She doesn’t have a boyfriend so one of her friends introduces her to Colin. They meet after scho
they get on really well. Colin asks Sarah out after a week and Sarah says she’ll think about it. She doesn’t really know
and she’s not sure if she wants to be his girlfriend. Then Colin tells Sarah about a party on Friday night. He asks her
with him. The party is a long way out of town but he will drive there because he is older than Sarah and he can dr
parents’ car. There is no public transport near the place where the party will be. Colin’s friends are eighteen like hi
Sarah is sure that there will be alcohol at the party too. Sarah is not sure what to do.

5. Listen to Sarah talk to three people about the party. Which of these people advises her to go to the party?

Modal Verbs: Modals are those helping verbs, which express the ‘mode’ or ‘manner’ of the actions indicated by the m
verbs. They express modes such as ability, possibility, probability, permission, obligation, advice etc.
Modals are used to:
• Ask permission—may, can, could
Examples: May I come in?
Could I use your pen, please?
• Make a request—can, could
Example: Could you please give me the doctor’s telephone number?
• Express a possibility—may, might, could
Example: It might rain during the night.
• Give advice or suggestion—should
Example: You should wear a helmet while riding your motorbike.
• Express necessity or compulsion—must, have to
Examples: We must slow down while driving in front of a school.
I have to submit my project by tomorrow.
• Express prohibition
Example: You must not talk loudly in the library.
• Express a promise or intention—will, shall
Example: I will mail you my address.
• Express a wish—may
Example: May you have a long life!
Note: A modal verb is always used with a verb in its basic form. The modal takes the tense while the main verb remain
its dictionary form. Examples:
 I can run (Observa que los dos verbos van en su forma simple, es decir no se conjugan)

7. Remember that we use “should” and “shouldn’t” for giving a suggestion or an advice. Look at these situations an
one advice using should and shouldn’t. (Recuerda que usamos “should”y shouldn’t” para dar una sugerencia o consejo
estas situaciones y da un consejo usando should y shouldn’t)

EXAMPLE: I want to earn some money but I’m at school Monday to Friday. (You should look for a job on the weekends
