● Discussion: How can you identify difficult words when reading an unfamiliar passage? 
▪ Introduce the story “Dogs can read human emotions”.  

▪ Have students preview the story for any unfamiliar words. 

▪ Students will place a Post-it next to the words that they identify as difficult. 

▪ Provide students with a list of predetermined vocabulary words and review as a class. 

▪ Complete a vocabulary check to assess students understanding. 

▪ Have students make predictions on the definitions using context clues and prior 

knowledge. 

Direct Instruction  

▪ As a class, we will read the article “Dogs can read human emotions”. 

▪ Model how to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.  

▪ Create a word map to aid students with comprehension.  

▪ Provide multiple examples of the word for students.  

▪ Have students provide examples or sentences for the word to make a connection.  

Experiential Learning  

▪ Students will create a word map for the remaining vocabulary words with a partner.  

▪ To conclude the lesson, students will play a vocabulary bingo game. I will say the definition 

of the word and the students will match it to the correct word on their board in order to 

win “bingo”.
