Unit: Clutches and Brakes

Que.1:
A cone clutch transmits power at 1000 rpm. The semi cone angle is 12.50. The
mean diameter of clutch is 300 mm, while the face width of contacting surfaces is
90 mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.25 and intensity of pressure is limited to 0.1
N/mm2. Calculate the force required to engage the clutch and power transmitting
capacity.
Que.2:
The centrifugal clutch, transmitting 18.5 kW at 720 rpm, consists of four shoes.
The clutch is to be engaged at 75% of the running speed. The inner radius of the
drum is 165 m, while the radius of the center of gravity of each shoe, during
engaged position is 140 mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.25. Calculate the mass
of each shoe.
Que.3:
A single-block brake with a torque capacity of 20 N-m is shown in Figure 1. The
coefficient of friction is 0.35 and the maximum pressure on the brake lining is 1
N/mm2. The width of the block is equal to its length. Calculate,
1. the actuating force
2. the dimensions of the block
3. the resultant hinge pin reactions
4. the rate of heat generated, if the brake drum rotates at 60 rpm.

Que.4:
The diameter of the drum of a single block brake is shown in Figure 2 is 200 mm
and the angle of contact is 900. If the operating force of 700 N is applied at the end
of a lever and coefficient of friction between the drum and the lining is 0.35,
determine the torque that may be transmitted by the block brake.

Que.5:
A simple band brake is shown in Figure 3. The diameter of the drum is 900 mm
and the band thickness is 5 mm. The coefficient of friction is 0.25 and the arc of
contact is 270 mm. The brake drum is attached to a hoisting drum that sustains a
load of 10 kN. The operating has a moment arm of 1.5 m and the band is attached
at 200 mm from the pivot point. Determine,
1. the force required to just support the load.
2. Force when the direction is reversed
3. Band width , Take ϭ = 50 N/mm2
