GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

• Write your answers on a clean white blank paper. Have your final answers
boxed at all times. No box, no consideration.
• Using the “ClearScanner” Mobile Application, scan (take a picture) of your
answers and compile it as a ONE PDF FILE only for 1 Activity. Multiple Files
are not accepted.
• Upload your PDF File as an “Assignment Type Submission” on BB.

Problems:
Instruction:
Solve the following problems related to free-body diagram of a body.

Problem 1:
A 3-ft-diameter pipe is supported every 16 ft by a small frame like that shown. Knowing that the
combined weight of the pipe and its contents is 500 lb/ft and assuming frictionless surfaces,
determine the reaction at C and at E:
Ans: 𝑅𝐶 = 7 𝑘𝑖𝑝𝑠; : 𝑅𝐶 = 3.01 𝑘𝑖𝑝𝑠;
Problem 2:
The three hinged point A, B and C arched is subjected to the two concentrated forces shown,
determine:

a. The reaction at C
b. The reaction at B
c. The reaction at A

Ans. 5.91kN; 5.91kN; 16.15kN

Problem 3:
Neglecting the weights of the members in the figure below, determine the forces acting
on the cylinder at 𝐴 and reaction at 𝐶.

Ans: 𝑅𝐶 = 28.8 𝑙𝑏 and 𝑅𝐴 = 47.2 𝑙𝑏

Problem 4:
The masses and lengths of the two homogeneous beams that make up the structure are shown in
the figure. Determine the magnitude of the pin reaction at B.

Ans: By= 1324 N; Bx = 1729 N

Problem 5:
The breaking strength of the cable FG that supports the portable camping stool is 2000 N.
Determine the maximum weight W that can be supported. Neglect friction and the weights of the
members.

Ans: 889 N

Your Turn:

Problem 6:
Determine the reactions at D, C and normal force at B.
Ans: 2160 N; 1200 N; 1080 N
Problem 7:
Consider the frame shown. What are the reactions at pins A and C?
Ans: 410.8 N and 415.5 N

Problem 8:
For the beam loaded as shown in the figure, draw the necessary free-body diagram and calculate
the reactions at (a) the roller support at 𝐴, (b) the internal reaction on the hinge, (c) the fixed
support at 𝐵.
