Bar Bending Schedule- Bar Bending Schedule (BBS) is basically the representation of bend shapes
and cut length of bars as per structure drawings. BBS is prepared from construction drawings. For each
member separate BBS is prepared because bars are bended in various shapes depending on the shape of
member

 Development Length (Ld) is provided in beams-

 To ensure proper bonding of steel reinforcement with concrete core
 To transfer the tensile stresses from concrete to steel
 To prevent slip or pulling out of bars under tension
 Ld =( Φσs/ 4 ζbd ) where Φ= diameter of bar, σs= tensile strength in steel, ζbd= bond
stress in steel

 Why are bent up bars provided in beam?

 The top portion of the bar resists negative bending moment which is high near and at the
supports
 The inclined portion of the bar resists shear force in the beam
 The portion of the bar at the bottom resists flexure/ sagging moment
 Provision of Bent up bars make the section economical by reducing the amount of steel

 Calculation of cranks (0.42L) in beam-

Inclined length of bar = 0.42L

Vertical length L= Overall depth – 2x clear cover
Inclined length= √ (L2 + L2 ) = 0.42L

 Hooks-
 In beams, hooks should be provided in stirrup to prevent them from opening up due to
excessive shear force in beams
 In columns, hooks should be provided in lateral ties also to prevent opening up of the
ties under the bulging action of the concrete core of columns
 It is always recommended to bend the stirrup/ tie hooks at 135 degree angle as
specified in the code of ductile detailing i.e. IS13920: 1993
 Hook length = 10Φ - 12Φ
