Strength of Sunk key 1
 When a key is provided with half a portion in the shaft and the other
half portion in the hub, then the key is known as the Sunk Key.

Considering Shear -

- Shear stress can be calculated.

Mt - Torque transmitted.
Considering Crushing- l – length of key.
w – width of key.
d – diameter of shaft.
t - thickness.
- Shear stress.
- Crushing stress can be calculated.

Couplings - 2

There are three types of Rigid coupling -

1. Muff Coupling
2. Clamp Coupling or split muff coupling
3. Rigid Flange Coupling

Flanges coupling - It is a A split-hub coupling -

output shafts.
Design of Muff coupling - 3

1. Calculate Diameter of Solid Shaft (d): -

3. Check shear stress induced in the sleeve

by using following formula:
2. Dimension of the sleeve, by empirical relation:
D= 2.5d , L= 3.5d , w = t = d/4. l = L/2.
D – Diameter of Sleeve or hub.
L – Length of Sleeve or hub.
l – length of key.
d – diameter of shaft.
Width(w) = thickness (t)
4. Checking the strength of Key. 4

Considering Shear -

w – width of key.
d – diameter of shaft.
t - thickness of key.

i) Considering Shear -

- Shear stress can be calculated.

ii) Considering Crushing-

 Diameter of shaft (d) = 71mm
 Dia. of the hub (D) = 177.5mm
 Length of the hub (L) = 248.5mm
 Length of key (l) = 124.25mm
 Width (w)= 17.75mm
 Thickness(t) = 17.75mm
- Crushing stress can be calculated.

Advantages of muff coupling Disadvantages of muff coupling

•It is simple, it has only two parts a sleeve and •It is difficult to assemble or dismantle
a key •It cannot accommodate any misalignment
•Since it has no projecting parts hence it is safe •It can not absorbs shocks and vibrations
to use •It requires more axial space compared with other types
•It has a compact construction of couplings.
•It is cheaper compared to other types of
couplings
