❑ Waste management has become one of the biggest issues in Malaysia due to rapid
economic growth, urbanization and industrialization.

❑ This proposed project operates by monitoring fill level of garbage dumped and the
presence of hazardous gases in the dumpster.

❑ This developed system is focused on dumpsters at residential areas and urban

cities.

2
PROBLEM
STATEMENT
❑ Hazardous wastes dumped in dumpsters affecting human’s health and
environment.

❑ Animals and insects carrying disease rummage through piled up garbage.

❑ Unsystematic garbage collection system where garbage collection is only
conducted within schedule without monitoring.
3
OBJECTIVES

❑ To design a trash littering system with the implementation of

Node MCU.

❑ To help cleaning agencies manage waste by monitoring waste

level using Internet of Things (IoT).

❑ To develop a garbage sensing system by detecting and

monitoring presence of hazardous gases.

4
SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

❑ Essential for building a cleaner and more hygienic

environment

❑ This system provides detection and monitoring to the

hazardous gases present in the dumpster

❑ The garbage only needs to be collected when the

dumpster is full through the monitoring of garbage
level

RESU L T S
❑ HC-SR04 ULTRASONIC SENSOR TESTING
o Three range of distance is applied to determine level of garbage accumulated that is 50%, 80% and 100% of garbage
bin volume.

o For three different level of garbage, LCD displays “Medium”, “Almost Full” and “Full! Don’t Junk” for user’s
reference.

❑ MQ-135 GAS SENSOR TESTING
o Two substances are used that is alcohol and flammable gases to induce MQ135 gas sensor to detect and
measure high concentration of hazardous gases.

o For the concentration of gases in normal air, the output voltage obtained at serial monitor is within the range
of 500V – 700V meanwhile when hazardous gases present, the output voltage happens to rise above 700V.

❑ INTEGRATION OF SENSORS IN MONITORING
SYSTEM

o Ultrasonic and MQ-135 gas sensor are integrated in a

circuit along with GPS module, which acts as location
tracker for garbage collection.
o Data obtained from two sensors are displayed by LCD
and Blynk app in mobile phone.

o Bad air quality in garbage bin is notified to users by

buzzing sound of the buzzer.

❑ DISPLAY OF GPS LOCATION, GARBAGE LEVEL AND AIR QUALITY BY SERIAL
MONITOR

VALUE DISPLAY
LATITUDE & o For every 2 seconds, NodeMCU
LONGITUDE ESP8266 exchange the data
information of location, distance
and air quality to serial monitor.

RESU L T S
❑ BLYNK NOTIFICATION
GARBAGE LEVEL AIR QUALITY
o Maximum waste level is o Poor air quality in garbage
achieved when garbage bin is determined by
reaches 81%-100% of output voltage of 700V
garbage bin volume. which exceeds normal air

o At garbage level of 3cm, red quality concentration.

LED blinks which indicates o At the output voltage of

minimum space of garbage 724 displayed on gauge,
bin left. Blynk app notify garbage

o Blynk app notify garbage collectors by “Bad air

quality! Please Collect
collectors by “Garbage is
Garbage”
Full Please Collect”.

24
RESU L T S
❑ BLYNK NOTIFICATION
LOCATION MAPPING

o In a condition where garbage is

full or poor air quality in garbage
bin or both, garbage collectors
locate the location by LCD and
map in Blynk app.

o LCD shows latitude of longitude

of garbage bin location .

o The map shows GPS location of

where this project was
conducted, that is at UniKL BMI
and also user’s location.
