(1) In the days when the judges were judging ( ‫ )ּבִימֵי ׁשְפ ֹט הַּׁש ֹ ְפטִים‬and a famine was

in the land. A man went from Bethlehem in Judah to sojourn in the fields of Moab, he,
his wife, and his two sons.
(2) The name of the man was Elimeleck and the name of his wife was Naomi and the name
of his two sons was Machlone and Chilion the Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah.
They went to the fields of Moab and they were there.
(3) Elimeleck, the husband of Naomi, died and she remained with her two sons.
(4) They took Moabite wives for themselves, the name of one was Orpah and the name of
the second was Ruth. They dwelt there about ten years.
(5) The two sons, Machlon and Chilion, also died and the woman was left over from her two
children and her husband.
(6) She arose with her daughters-n-law and returned from the fields of Moab because she
heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord visited his people to give food to them.
(7) She went out from the place that she was and her two daughters-in-law were with her
and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.
(8) Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go return woman to the house of her mother.
May the Lord do kindly with you as you have done with the dead and with me.
(9) May the Lord give to you and let you find rest each woman in the house of her husband
and she kissed them and they lifted up their voices and they wept.
(10) And they said to her, we will return with you to your people.
(11) And Naomi said, Return my daughters, why do you go with me? Are there still
sons in my womb and they will be husbands for you?
(12) Turn daughters, go for (causal KEY) I am too old for having a man. If (Conditional
KEY) I say yes there is hope for me, or if I have the night for a man, or if I bear sons.
(13) Will you wait for them until they are grown? For them will you refrain yourself
(nif), to not be a man. No my daughters, it embitters me exceedingly on account of you
because (Causal KEY) the hand of the Lord has went out against me.
(14) And they lifted up their voices and they wept again and Orpah kissed her
mother-in-law and ruth clung to her.
(15) And she said, behold you sister-in-law turned back to her people and to her
gods. Turn back after your sister-in-law.
(16) Ruth said, do not entreat for me to leave you to return after her because (Causal
KEY) to which you will go, I go, and in which you lodge, I will lodge. Your people are my
people and your gods and my gods.
(17) In which you will die, I will die and there I will be buried thus May the lord do
more to me and thus if (Conditional KEY) death will separate us.
(18) And she saw that (Nominalized Clause) she strengthened herself to go with her
and she ceased from speaking to her.
(19) The two of them went until they came to Bethlehem and when they entered
Bethlehem, all the town made noise over them and they said, “Is this Naomi?”
(20) And she said to them Do not call me Naomi, call me Mara because (causal KEY)
the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.
(21) I went away full and I returned empty, why did the Lord call me Naomi and the
Lord answered me and the Almighty did evil to me.
(22) Noami returned with Ruth the Moabite her daughter-in-law with her, who
returned from the fields of Moab, and they came into Bethlehem at the beginning of the
barley harvest.
Ruth 2
(1) And Naomi’s relative of her husband, a mighty man from the clan of Elimelech and his
name was Boaz.
(2) And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi “Let me go to the field and let me gather in grains
after which I will find favor in his eyes and she said to her Go my daughter.
(3) And she went and came and gleaned in the fields after the reapers. And she came by
chance to the part of the field belonging to Boaz who was from the clan of Elimelech.
(4) And Behold Boaz came from Bethlehem and he said to the reapers “the Lord is with
you” and they said to him, “May the Lord bless you.”
(5) And Boaz said to his servant standing above the reapers, “ who is this woman?”
(6) The servant who stood over the reapers answered and said, She is a Moabite woman,
who returned with Naomi from the fields of Moab.
(7) And she said Let me glean and I will gather in sheaves after the reapers and she went
and stood from morning until now, this she rested in the house for a short time.
(8) Boaz said to Ruth, Do you not listen my daughter, do not walk to glean in another field
and also you will not cross from there and thus you will cling with my women.
(9) Your eyes were in the field that he will reap and you go after them. Should I command
the men servants to not touch you? you were thirsty and you went to the vessel and
drank from which the men will draw.
(10) And she fell on her face and bowed toward the ground and she said to him, why
have I found favor in your eyes for you to regard me (even though- concessive nuance) I
am a foreigner.

(11) And Boaz answered and said to her, it has (emphatic use of infinitive absolute:

d˝Å…gUh d∏´…gUh) surly been announced to me all that


you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband and you left your
father and your mother and your native land and came to a people you did not know
yesterday or the day before (idiomatic lit- yesterday and the third day).
(12) May the Lord repay your work and may your reward be full from the Lord God of
Israel who you came for refuge under his wings.
(13) And she said, May I find favor in the eyes of my Lord for you comforted me and
that you spoke over the heart of your maidservant and I am not as one of your
maidservants.
(14) And Boaz said to her during mealtime, “Come here and eat from the bread and
dip your morsel in the wine” so she sat beside the reapers and he passed to her roasted
grain and she ate and she was satisfied and she had left overs.
(15) And she arose and gleaned and Boaz commanded his servants by saying, she will
also glean between the sheaves and do not humiliate her.
(16) And also you will certainly pull out for her from the bundles and you will leave
and she will glean and you will not rebuke her.
(17) And she gleaned from the field until the evening and she beat which she gleaned
and there was about an ephah of barely.
(18) And she carried and went to the city and her mother-in-law saw that she gleaned
and she went out and gave to her what food she had left over from her abundance.
(19) And her mother-in-law said to her, Where did you glean today? And where did
you work? Blessed is the one who regarded you. And she told her mother-in-law that
she worked with him and she said, the man’s name that I worked with today is Boaz.
(20) And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, Blessed is he by the Lord who does not
forsake his mercy for the living and for the dead. And Naomi said to her, the man is near
to us, he is from our redeemer.
(21) Ruth the Moabite said, Also surly he said to me with the servants that for me she
will keep close until when they are finished all of the harvest that belongs to me.
(22) And Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is good my daughter that you go
out with his women, they will not fall upon you in another field.
(23) She stayed close to the women of Boaz when gleaning until the end of the barley
harvest and the wheat harvest and she lived with her mother-in-law.
Ruth 3
(1) And Naomi, her mother-in-law, said to her, my daughter, will I not seek rest for you so
that it will be good for you?
(2) And now, is not Boaz our kinsman, which you were with his women. See he is
winnowing the barley at the threshing floor this night.
(3) You will wash and anoint and put your cloak on you and go down to the threshing floor
do not make yourself known to the man until he finished eating and drinking.
(4) When he lies down and you know the place that he will lie there, go in and uncover his
feet and he will tell you what you will do.
(5) And she said to her, all that you say to me I will do.
(6) And she went down to the threshing floor and she did all that her mother-in-law
commanded.
(7) And Boaz ate and drank and made merry in his heart and he went to lie down at the end
of the grain heap and she went in secretly. She uncovered his feet and lied down.
(8) When it was midnight, the man was startled and turned and behold a woman lying at
his feet (adverbial accusative).
(9) And he said, who are you? She said, I am Ruth your handmaid. Spread your wings over
your handmaid for you are a redeemer.
(10) He said may you be blessed to the Lord my daughter. Your last kindness is
greater than the first. You did not go after the young men with, whether poor or rich.
(11) And now, my daughter, do not fear. All that you say I will do to you, for, knowing
all of the towns people, that you are a strong woman.
(12) And now that it is true, if I am redeeming, is there a redeemer even closer than
me?
(13) Stay this night and in the morning, if he will redeem you, good, let him redeem.
But if he is not pleased to redeem you, I redeem you as the Lord lives. Lie down until
the morning.
(14) And she laid at his feet (adverbial accusative) until the morning and she arose
before the man would recognize his friend. And he said to her, Do not make known that
the woman came to the threshing floor.
(15) He said, Give me the garment that is on you and seize it. And she seized it and he
measured six barley and put on it and he went to the city.
(16) And she went to her mother-in-laws and she said who are you my daughter? And
she told to her all that the man did for her.
(17) And she said these six barley he gave to me for he said to me, “you will not go
empty to your mother-in-law.
(18) And she said, wait, my daughter until you know how the matter will fall, because
the man will not be quiet but he will finish the matter this day.
Chapter 4
(1) Boaz went up to the gate and sat there. Behold, the redeemer passed by that Boaz
spoke of. And he said, turn aside, sit down here so-and-so. And he turned aside and
sat down.
(2) And he took ten men from the elders of the city and he said sit here and they sat
down.
(3) And he said to the redeemer, a portion of the field that belonged to Elimeleck our
brother, Noami, who returned from the land of Moab, is selling.
(4) And I said, I will reveal to your ear saying Buy in front of those who are sitting and
before the elders of my people if you will redeem, then redeem! And if you will not
redeem them, tell me and I will know that there is no one except you to redeem it
and I am after you and he said I will redeem it.
(5) Boaz said, In the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi and from Ruth the
Moabite who is the wife of the dead, you will buy to establish the name of the dead
man on his inheritance.
(6) But the redeemer said, I will not be able to redeem for me lest I destroy my
inheritance. Redeem for yourself my right of redemption, for I will not be able to
redeem.
(7) And this from before in Israel concerning redemption and exchange to establish all
of the matter, a man draws his shoe and gives to his friend and this was the
testimony in Israel.
(8) And the redeemer said to Boaz, Buy it for you, and he drew his sandal.
(9) And Boaz said to the elders and all of the people, You are witnesses this day that I
bought all that belonged to Elimeleck and all that belonged to Chillion and Machlon
from the hand of Naomi.
(10) And also I bought Ruth the Moabite wife of Machlon for myself for a wife to
establish the name of the dead over his inheritance and that the name of the dead
will not be cut off from among his brothers and the gate of his place. You are
witnesses this day.
(11) And all of the people that were at the gate and elders said, Witnesses, let the
Lord give the coming woman to your house like Rachael and Leah, who built the
house of Israel together and. Make strong in Ephratha and call the name in
Bethlehem.
(12) Let your house be like the house of Perez who bore Tamar to Judah from the
seed that the Lord will give to you by this young woman.
(13) Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife and he went into her and the Lord gave
to her a pregnancy and she bore a son.
(14) And the Women said to Naomi, Bless the Lord who did not stop to you a
redeemer this day and may his name be called in Israel.
(15) And he will be for you one to restore life and to nourish your gray hair, because
of your daughter-in-law, who loves you she bore him, she that is better to you than
seven sons.
(16) And Naomi took the child and set it on her bosom
