Flight Itinerary Planning
Flight itinerary planning is the
process by which a number of
suitable flights are selected to
conform with the passenger’s
desired travel plans
Suggesting itineraries requires knowledge in fight itinerary planning, which is
the process by which cities to be visited are arranged in the desired sequence to
conform with the passenger’s desired travel plans, starting from the point of
origin to the destination or destinations to be visited in the desired sequence. To
do this, one must follow these steps:

1. Identify the city-pairs involved (origin/destinations or where a

sector begins and it ends).
2. Once the city-pairs are identified, select the suitable flights
between the city-pairs of schedule (ETD/ETA) and frequency (day
of week). In order to accomplish this, a good knowledge of world
geography, airline flight geography, and how to be oriented by a
map are essential in itinerary planning.
Important Information and
Requirements in the Flight
Itinerary Planning
1. Knowledge of the “ Four
Directions of the World”
(N,E,W,S)
2. The IATA Areas
3. The city / Airport Codes
4. The Airline Codes
Flight Itinerary Terms
Ticketed points of travel. These
are those cities on a flight
itinerary where the passengers
either enplanes (boards an
aircraft) or deplanes(get off an
aircraft).
1. Origin- is the city where the journey
begins
2. Destinations- is the final or ultimate
stopping place
3. Outbound Destinations- is the city
located the furthest in distance from the
origin
4. Outbound Sector- is the position of the
itinerary from the origin to and including
the outward destination
5. Inbound (return) sector- is the portion of
the itinerary from the outward
destination to the final destination
6. Intermediate City- is any ticketed point of
travel between the origin and outward
destination
7. Connecting City- is an intermediate city
on the itinerary where the passenger is
required to transfer flights

trip (OJ): An open-jaw trip is an
incomplete round or circle trip
A. Turn around open jaw is not closed
in the outward destination portion of
the trip

between the final destination and the
origin.
