Abstract

This study examines the benefits of having a Facebook account in student ICT strand in

Arellano University-Pasig. The purpose of this research on how the important of having a

Facebook which is you communicate to other or to exchange message with one another. The

literature review serves as foundation from which to assess current findings and offer

recommendation to the field for future research on Facebook and online social networks more

broadly.

Facebook one of the most popular social network site among high school or teenager

student. In this paper, we explore whether these students are using Facebook to find new people

in their offline communities or to learn more about people they initially meet.

Millions of contemporary young adults use social networking sites. However, little is

known about how much why, and how they use these sites. Facebook is quickly becoming one of

the most popular tools for social communication. However, Facebook is somewhat different

from other social networking sites as it demonstrates an offline – to – online trend; that is, the

majority of Facebook friends.

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

A human being is a social creature. That’s why communication is an absolute necessity for

people. While there are several tradition channels of communication, new ones appear which has

an impact on how people of communicate. One of such thing is a down of social networks. It was

not Facebook that was the first social networks, but it wasn’t until Facebook was launched that

social networks gained worldwide popularity.

According to May 2011 “Consumer reports survey, there are 7.5 million under 10,

violating the sites term service”.

Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004, owned and operated

by Facebook, Inc. As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users, more than

half of them using Facebook on a mobile device. Users most register before using the site, after

which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange message,

including automatic notifications when they update their profile.

Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school

or other characteristics and categorized their friends into list such a “People from work “or

“Close friends”.

Facebook is beneficial to one’s social life because they can continuous stay in contact with

their friends and relatives, while others say that it can cause increased antisocial tendencies

because people are not directly communicating with each other.

Background of the Study

Facebook has been launched around February 2004. It has almost 14 years since has been

launched by Mark Zuckerberg along with fellow Harvard college students and roommates,

Eduardo Salverin, Andrew McCollum, Ducting Moskoultz and Chris Hughes.

Facebook start to explodes its popularity when it was introduced by Zuckerberg it was the

most famous website in the world. Facebook was known for quick and easy way to stay in touch

with friends.

Facebook is also known for making business, organization(Group), public figure to connect

with consumer where they can post contents about their business and offer to their consumer.

Facebook purpose is to make the world more open and connected with friends and family,

and express what matters to them.

Setting of the Study

This study will be conducted in Pasig City, (figure 1) “Pasig” is an old Sanskrit referring to

a “river flowing from one body of water to another”, in the case of Pasig river, from Laguna de

bay to Manila Bay Pasig is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. The Augustinians created

it in 1572. In June 1901, Act No. 137 of the Philippine commission incorporated Pasig in the

newly created province of Rizal. Until 1975 when the Metro Manila commission was created

under Presidential Decree No. 824.

Figure 2 shows the islands that are geographically divided into three main areas, namely

Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Only 2, 600 islands of the archipelago are inhabited, the

Philippines is using a bilingual medium of instruction. Certain subjects are taught in English and

rest is the national language that is Filipino. Throughout the islands, English is widely spoken as

a second language. The Philippine is predominantly Roman Catholic Country (82%) and is the

only Christian nation in Asia

Theoretical Framework

Borrowed from psychology, Flow Theory helps assess human-computer

interactions and address people’s use of the internet. Flow, as defined by (sikszentimanlyi

(1997, pg.36), is the “holistic sensation that people feel when they act with total

involvement.” It implies absorption in a task, such that the person is completely attracted

by the artefact and the task being performed. Website, email tools, and the computer

itself are all artefact; and task refer to an assignment performed using these tools

(firineriants and zhang, 2003). Thus, Facebook is an artefacts and people using this

network engage in task that prompt their flow on the platform. Novak at el (1998) also

provide an extensive review of the definition of flows as experienced by people

immersed in a task. Described as total concentration and sleep involvement into the task,

these activities result in intrinsic enjoyment combined with keen curiosity and pleasure

that the encourages repetition of the activity, but also the all of time and an inability to

control usage or halt the activity.

Social media has been evolving since the start 20 th century and one of the first and most

successful social networking site is the feedback who is up to now giving us all the conveniences

we need and never failed to amaze others.

Significance of the Study

The purpose if the study is to investigate the ICT student’s involvement in the most

popular online social networks site Facebook and also the benefits of having a Facebook

account.

Facebook give to ICT students to relax their stress. Facebook is unnecessary as those who

have an account. It’s fun to have Facebook account because all students and teacher, family and

friends will be enjoying time in Facebook. This study would provide information on the ICT

students and how it can be used in relation with their academics.

And also, the teachers who read this site will be inspire and to help everyone to connect

with different people anywhere. It will include their knowledge about the other places. Which is

the reason why this web is appealing to all the time correspond on communicate explicitly

concerning their lives, estimation on option and interest and provide as the chance to choose

what their desire to share.

Scope and Limitation

Although it was preferable to conduct this research in all ICT students are the

informants for personal interview guide questionnaire of this research found in Arellano

University-Pasig this research focusses about the benefits if having Facebook account to plot,

communicate and explore the different interesting information’s. This University is selected as a

site of the current study because of a large number of students. The focus of this study is limited

with the students who maintain a Facebook account. However, the result would have been

comprehensive if no Facebook user were included and their academic performance was

compared with Facebook users, therefore a study that introduces in further studies.

Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined according to the context in which they will be used in

the study for a cleaner understanding for what they mean.

Breach – this term refers to make a gap in and break through.

Controversy – this term refers to disagreement, typically when for long

proceeding and other resources which are relevant to a particular issue.

According to Chadd Brook in his article “why Facebook is good to you” (2012). He said

that spending on time on Facebook can help people relax slow down their heart rate and decrease

stress level.

The article is relevant to the present study because Facebook help people a proper way of

using Facebook while monitoring their health.

According to Benjamin Bor in his article “Facebook is friend” he said that Facebook and

people spending time in social networking also make people feel good about themselves and

boost self-steam.

The article is relevant to the present study because people with low confidence can be

helped to talk to people by a social media.

students.

helping the students in various ways from time to time.

said that Facebook is one of the most important social media that promotes the exchange of

messages between the people across the world.

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the through and in-depth

search done by researcher this was present the synthesis of the art and to fully understand the

research to be done for better cited comprehension of the study. The literature and studies in this

chapter the different concept, understanding and ideas generalization or conclusion and different

development related to study of the enrollment from the past up to the present and which serves

as the researcher guide in developing the project. Those that were also included in this chapter

helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and similar to the present study.

CHAPTER 3

Methods and Procedure

This chapter presents the methods to be use in the study. It also describes the instruments

used. The sampling technique, the procedure of data gathering and statistical treatment of data.

Methods of Research

Descriptive research was used in this study. Descriptive because is used to this describe

characteristics of a population of this study. And it’s may help to uncover the facts and meaning

qualitative method which researchers has personal contact with the participants through in-depth

interviewing and prolonged observing. The research used audio recorder to record in depth

interview for transcript.

This interview is conducted in Arellano University-Pasig three Grade 11 ICT students

were chosen as for the personal interview guide questionnaire.

Sampling Technique

Convenience sampling is a type of non-probability sampling method where the sample is

taken from a group of people easy to contact or to reach to us the people to answer question

would be example of a convenience sampling this type of sampling is also known us grab

sampling or availability sampling. This sampling technique where subject is selected because of

their convenience accessibility and proximity to the researcher. Although convenience sampling

is like the name suggest convenience it runs a high risk that the sample will not represent the

population. However sometimes a convenience sampling is the only way that can drum up

participant.

Research Instrument

The following instrument was used to conduct of the research.

1. Interview guide questionnaire – questionnaire that was used access research and the

needed data for the research problem.

2. Audio Recorder – it was used to document the interview process to interpret the results.

3. Transcript of interview – this was the manuscript use for interpreting the result for the

next chapter.

Validation of Instruments

The practical research teacher Ms. Arlit Janry C. Parlero validated the interview guide

questionnaire before proceeding to the interview.

Procedure of Data Gathering

The Formulation of Interview guide question first in doing chapter 3 in look for

information in needed data for a research problem or topic should planned question that answer

properly. Next is validating of the personal interview guide questionnaire to validate the question

before to proceed to the interview then after to approve the guide questionnaire. The next is the

personal interview in informants is the process to find the person that understand the topic and

answer the provided question. The next is the transcription of audio recorded files this is the best

way to convert to record to searchable and readable text by using your voice instead of your head

sign to communicate with each other. Next is the result and finding of the interview that should

provide an evidence from the data to support the guide questionnaire will made and take the form

of quotation from interviews and except from observation and documents.

M.J.M.T: My name is Mark Jayson Mandac Tion from ICT 2 - Grade 11.

B.J.A.D: Alright Jayson question number one who will benefit of having Facebook?

M.J.M.T: Benefits? I think all of people that have Facebook account can benefits to this,

because they communicate easier to each other even they are separated, Facebook can use

many ways, it can be use to business that’s all.

B.J.A.D: Question number two what are the common benefits of having a Facebook

account?

M.J.M.T: The benefits of having a Facebook account is you can use this in many ways.

First it makes communication easier. The second is it can be use to entertainment the last

it can be use for searching data information.

T.C: For me students benefits most using Facebook since the platform is only use for

connecting, not for teaching or academics, student benefits by connecting and talking to
