ASSIGNMENT 6 - ETHICAL STANDARD

Instructions:

1. Search 5 situations where you can apply the relevant Legal, Moral and Ethical Standard of care in a
Perioperative patient. Each item must be supported with 1 Nurse’s Role (responsibility) during
implementation. ( 10 points)

2. Please use MS word document as attachment.

Answer:

1. Patient refuses to have blood transfusion because the patient is an active member of Jehovah’s
witness
 As a nurse you must respect the decision of the patient but try to convince the patient
to have a blood transfusion. If the patient insisted not to undergo blood transfusion
then sign them a consent that whatever happens, the nurse or the hospital would not
be responsible for the client anymore once they sign the consent.
2. The patient expressed fear because the neighbour told the patient that it is very painful.
 As a nurse, the first thing you need to do is to build rapport to the client and once the
rapport is being established, health teaching must be done in order not to overthink on
what will happen. Explain every procedure that has to be done and be honest in
answering the questions to the patient. Give reassurance to the patient.
3. Patient refuses to have surgery unless a member of the family is in the operating room during
the surgery.
 As a nurse, you must convince the patient not to panic because that’s the best for
her/his life. Explain to the patient that only health care workers and the patient are
allowed to enter to the operating room. Give assurance to the patient that their family is
in the outside of the operating room waiting for the surgery to be done.
4. Patient needs to undergo an emergency surgery because the patient is battling against life and
death situation. However, the family isn’t around on that day.
 As a nurse you must inform first the surgeon(s) that there will be an emergency surgery.
As the client is unable to sign a consent, effort should be made to contact the patient’s
family and/or 2 surgeons can sign the consent.
5. Patient Nikko refuses to take the prescribed med after the surgery
 Ask the patient first as to why the patient refuses to take the meds. And then do a
health teaching as to why he needs to take the prescribed medicine(s).
