Subject: Electrostatic discharge prevention for series 2

writing heads
_________________________________________________________________________

1. Purpose
To inform the field about the new electrostatic discharge prevention package for
series 2 press writing head lasers.

2. Background
Series 2 writing heads are packed and shipped with the electronic unit separate
from the optical unit.
Occasionally, while handling the electronic and optical units,
(installing/uninstalling/packing/unpacking) the lasers might be exposed to
electrostatic damage because the laser cables are exposed and unshielded.
Electrostatic damage can reduce the effective life expectancy of the laser unit,
cause individual laser failure, or reduce laser power.
New writing heads (CA270-00101 for web presses and CA270-00021 for
sheet-fed presses) were designed to prevent damage from electrostatic
discharge, thereby prolonging the life of the laser unit.

The writing head modification includes (See Figure 1 in ESD_parts.pdf
attachment):
• Connector covers
• Anti-static wrist band for assembly
In addition to the anti-static solution, the writing head parameters diskette is now
shipped packaged in a plastic bag attached to the writing head (instead of in
the press book). See Figure 3 in the attached document, ESD_parts.pdf.
The electrostatic prevention solution (ECO 10687) is implemented in the
production line for writing heads starting from serial number 31658, and
starting from the following press serial numbers:

3. Instructions
Disassembling a Writing Head
Note: Refer to the attached document, ESD_parts.pdf.

•1. Take the electrostatic wristband out of its plastic bag (Item 6—Figure 1).
•2. Put the wristband around your wrist, and ground the wire attached to it.
•3. Unplug the writing head connectors J3 and J4 (Items 4 and 5—Figure 1).
•4. Remove the connector covers (Items 2 and 3—Figure 1) from the tie-wrap (Item
1—Figure 1) without cutting the tie-wrap.
Note: The tie-wraps which connect the connector covers are re-usable—do not
remove them.
•5. Attach the connector covers (Items 2 and 3—Figure 1) to the writing head
connectors you removed, as shown in Figure 2. Make sure the ground wire is
attached to the optics unit chassis.
•6. Figure 4 shows how the unit should be shipped.
