Subject: Solution for a computer boot problem

_________________________________________________________________________

1. Purpose
To inform the field how to fix a computer boot problem

2. Background
Some computers fail to boot, mainly first thing in the morning, and the monitor
does not indicate that the computer is on. A specific Boot ROM chip on the
VCORN I causes these bad boots and, in Pentium 4 computers, causes the
status screen (see fig. 1, attachment) to display an error message ("PCI
detection error") and generate a beep.

These faulty chips are produced by Integrated Silicon Solution, Inc. (ISSI). If the
Boot ROM chip on the VCORN I indicates that it is an ISSI chip, it must be
replaced with a chip from a different manufacturer.
