FINAL REQUIREMENT IN PRACTICAL RESEARCH 1

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1. What is research?
2. What is the importance of research?
3. Differentiate qualitative and quantitative research.
4. What are the types of qualitative research? Give a brief description.
5. Discuss how to select a topic
6. Discuss the steps in writing a research title.
7. Enumerate and give a brief description of Chapter 1
8. Explain Chapter 2

Note: In answering the questions above, use your own words and cite your references.

1. Research is conducted to evaluate the validity of a hypothesis or an interpretive

framework; to assemble a body of substantive knowledge and findings for sharing them
in appropriate manners; and to generate questions for further inquiries. Research is an
organized inquiry carried out to provide information for solving problems. Research is
the Systematic process of collecting and analyzing information.

2. Research is as important as life itself. It provides the building block upon which
societal growth and advancement is hinged. Our understanding of the way things are,
how things happen and what is responsible for such occurrences is due to the help of
research. Research also helps us study patterns in the past, feelings, attitudes and
opinion then use it to determine what should happen next.

3. Qualitative research is a scientific method of observation to gather non-numerical

data. This type of research "refers to the meanings, concepts definitions,
characteristics, metaphors, symbols, and description of things" and not to their "counts
or measures." While in Quantitative Research involves the use of computational,
statistical, and mathematical tools to derive results. It is conclusive in its purpose as it
tries to quantify the problem and understand how prevalent it is by looking for
projectable results to a larger population.

4. Phenomenological Method aims to describe, understand and interpret the meanings

of experiences of human life. It focuses on research questions such as what it is like to
experience a particular situation.
Ethnographic Model approach where you look at people in their cultural setting, with
the goal of producing a narrative account of that particular culture, against a
theoretical backdrop.
Grounded Theory refers to a set of systematic inductive methods for conducting.
These analyses provide focused, abstract, conceptual theories that explain the studied
empirical phenomena.
Case Study Model approach that is used to generate an in-depth, multi-faceted
understanding of a complex issue in its real-life context. Design that is used
extensively in a wide variety of disciplines, particularly in the social sciences.
Historical Model involves examining past events to draw conclusions and make
predictions about the future. The steps in historical research are: formulate an idea,
formulate a plan, gather data, analyze data, and analyze the sources of data.
Narrative Model researcher analyses the stories people create, engaging in an inquiry
of asking a given question of the narrative 'texts' for a given purpose.

5. Brainstorming it encourages people to come up with thoughts and ideas that can, at
first, seem a bit crazy. Some of these ideas can be crafted into original, creative
solutions to a problem, while others can spark even more ideas.

Choose a topic that interests you. Use the following questions to help generate topic
ideas.

 Is there an aspect of a class that you are interested in learning more about?
 Do you have a strong opinion on a current social or political controversy?
 Did you read or see a news story recently that has piqued your interest or made
you angry?

Then choose three subjects or topics and read the background information enables you to
get an overview of the topic and see how your idea relates to broader, narrower, and
related issues. It also provides a great source for finding words commonly used to describe
the topic. These keywords may be very useful to you reseach.

6. STEP 1: Ask yourself these questions and make note of the answers: What is my paper
about?What techniques/ designs were used?Who/what is studied?What were the
results?
STEP 2: Use your answers to list key words.
