Overview
Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (Unified CME) has been traditionally supported as an
installation on physical routers such as Cisco Integration Services Router Series (ISR). From Cisco IOS XE
Gibraltar 16.10.1a Release onwards, the Unified CME feature set is supported in a virtualized form factor
with the Cisco Cloud Services Router 1000v Series (CSR 1000V). Virtual CME (vCME) enables a subset of
the traditional Unified CME feature set to be deployed in cloud-based data center deployments.

Software Requirements for Virtual CME
As part of the Unified CME 12.5 release, Virtual CME features have been verified using:
• VMware ESXi Hypervisor 6.5.0
• Cisco UCS Server—Cisco UCS C240 M5 (UCSC-C240-M5SX)
Note For more information on the requirements to run a CSR 1000V instance, see CSR1000V Data Sheets.
Virtual CME supports up to 450 device registrations and 113 active calls for any of the Cisco CSR1000V
virtual machine resource profiles (Small, Medium, Large and Large plus extra RAM).. For more information,
see Table 1: Virtual CME Form Factor, on page 2.

• You need to disable hyper threading while configuring Virtual CME on Cisco UCS. For more information
on the best practices for setting BIOS parameters for performance, see BIOS Settings.
• For information on network interfaces for configuring Virtual CME, see Mapping Cisco CSR 1000v
Network Interfaces to VM Network Interfaces.
Note Virtual CME is validated and supported only on the Cisco Cloud Services Router 1000V Series. Support is
not offered for Virtual CME instances installed on other hardware.

Protocol Support
Protocol Support
Virtual CME installed on the CSR 1000V router supports all the communication protocols that are supported
on the Unified CME, installed on a Cisco Integrated Services Routers (ISR). The endpoints with the following
protocols are supported on vCME:
• SIP—All SIP endpoints that are supported on Unified CME. For information on the endpoints supported
on Unified CME, see Virtual CME 12.5 Supported Firmware, Platforms, Memory, and Voice Products.
• SCCP—Only Analog Voice Gateways, such as Cisco VG310, VG320, and VG350 are supported as
SCCP endpoints on vCME.
• Mixed Deployment (SIP and VG acting as SCCP endpoints). SCCP phones are not supported with Virtual
CME.
Note • NIM based Analog or Digital PSTN trunks are not supported on Virtual CME.
Feature Support
All SIP endpoints supported by Unified CME, including the Cisco IP Phone 7800 Series and Cisco 8800
Series IP Phones, support Virtual CME. SCCP is only supported for use with Cisco VG 300 Series Analog
Voice Gateways (VG310, VG320, and VG350) only. Virtual CME features are validated with Cisco IOS
Release 15.6(3)M2 for VG (SCCP) endpoints.
For detailed feature support information on vCME for the SIP endpoints and Cisco VG300 Series Analog
Voice Gateways (SCCP), see the section CSR 1000V in Unified CME Platform Protocol Compatibility Matrix.

Installation of Virtual CME
You can use the OVA file included in the Cisco CSR 1000V router software image package to install Virtual
CME. The file is used for deploying the OVA template on the VM (in TAR format). For details on how to
perform the deployment, see Deploying the OVA to the VM.
Note Explicit subscription of CPUs and Memory is required while deploying OVA provided by Cisco CSR 1000V.
You can use the .iso file to install Virtual CME. This file is used for installing the software image on the
Virtual Machine (requires manually creating the VM). For details on the deployment, see Installing the Cisco
CSR 1000v in VMware ESXi Environments.
Licensing Requirements
Virtual CME offers the same licensing options that are available for Unified CME. To allow the configuration
of Virtual CME on a Cisco Cloud Services Router 1000V Series, you must enable an APPX or AX license.
The licensing options for Virtual CME on Cisco CSR 1000V are available under the CLI command license
boot level:

Virtual CME
Enable Virtual CME
For Virtual CME, you must configure (using the CLI command platform hardware throughput level) a
maximum throughput value of 100 Mbps. This value could be lesser based on the number of active calls to
support and system codecs applicable. For information on throughput licenses, see Changing Throughput
Licenses.
It is recommended that you install Cisco Smart License for Virtual CME. Cisco Smart License for Virtual
CME is enabled with the same entitlement tags that are assigned for Unified CME.
For more information on licensing options available for Unified CME, see Licenses.
For detailed steps on how to install Cisco CSR 1000V Licenses, see Installing Cisco CSR 1000V Licenses.
Note The configuration is for SIP endpoints on vCME. For VG endpoints (SCCP): the applicable configurations
under the telephony-service configuration mode support SCCP on vCME. The SCCP configuration on vCME
is consistent with the support that is offered on Unified CME installed on Integrated Services Routers (ISRs).

Feature Information for Virtual CME
The MAC address of the voice ports can be identified by removing the first three characters of the Device
Name displayed in the show stcapp device summary output. For example, the MAC address of the device
with Device Name AN6549AEBB58000 is 549A.EBB5.8000.
