Determine the structural integrety of lifting pad eyes here online at

Padeyecalculator.com

A padeye provides a safe attachment point to lift a structure safely and is often

welded to a structure, or is an integrated part of a larger structure. A basic pad eye
consists out of plate with a outer radius and a hole that ts a shackle, of enough
capacity, to lift the structure safely.

The calculator above can be used to determine the required geometry of a structural
sound and safe pad eye. By lling in the required minimum breaking load and
dimensions it calculates the axial/bending, shear and equivalent stress in the
sections A-A and B-B.

The following is assumed for the calculations:

Any in-plane angle α is allowed, the governing angle α being  +/- β is veri ed;
Material of the pad eye is steel with a minimum yield stress as speci ed in the
calculation;
The pin of the shackle has a loose t in the pad eye, causing additional bending in
the sections;
Hertz bearing stress is assumed not to be signi cant since it is no failure
mechanism;
The weld of the base of the pad eye, bottom part in the gure above the calculator,
is also required to be veri ed in another calculation.

Among others the formulas are applicable for steel pad eyes as used in the elds of:

Building construction
Civil construction
O shore construction
