Since the foundation of KANON Loading Equipment B.V. in 1979 by

Mr. Lex H.J. Kanon, the company has successfully supplied thousands
of loading systems throughout the world. Many of these systems were
‘customised’ or even ‘tailor-made’, sometimes using unconventional
solutions to meet specific requirements and provide ‘best fit’ for every
situation, which is one of the reasons of KANON's success.

This catalogue provides you with the most common KANON solutions
to support you with safety and efficiency in the design of your loading
facilities. The catalogue does definitely not provide all solutions; in
case you do not find what you are locking for please do not hesitate
to contact us through one of our agents or directly at our main offices
in Holland and let the KANON team start working for you!

Why chosing
KANON
Why choosing KANON as your partner on loading arms projects?

With over more than 25 years of experience in Loading/ unloading arms and safety items, we can
offer the customer the following:

Kanon world wide

Kanon Loading Equipment is operating world wide through a well-chosen and trained web of agents,
which represents the Kanon product in all their assets.
Next to our two production facilities in the Netherlands to cover Europe, we have also one production
facility in Malaysia (Kuantan) to cover the Middle east and far east region and one production facility
in South Africa (Johannesburg) to cover the southern part of the African continent.

Partnership
Our main objective is to work with the customer as partner and not as only one of the many suppliers
to finalise a project. Our experience is that this is the only way to build a relation between the Kanon
organisation and the customer, and to prove that Kanon is the best choice to work with as your
partner.

Flexibility
Kanon Loading Equipment is a small private owned Dutch company, with approx. 40 people
employed in the office and approx. 30 people in production. Due to the fact that we are a small
company we have short and direct lines in our organisation. For every project we have a dedicated
project manager, that will be your contact person from the start of the project till the end upto
commissioning of the project.

Quality
Our company is ISO9001/9002 certified by Lloyds, ensuring a well controlled quality system. Our staff
is trained internally and externally to meet the right level of education and capabilities providing the
best quality to all our customers in product and organisation.

Swivel joints
The most important items in a loading arm are swivel joints. Kanon swivel joints are designed for leak
free operation, meaning no maintenance, no stops caused by to leakage and no delays in loading.
This saves time and thus money.

Our advanced swivel joint design includes the following features:

• 4-point contact ball races ensuring light operation and large balls allowing high loads.
• The product seal can be replaced without removing the balls.
• Long life lubrication needing low frequency maintenance. (Only one check per year is
recommended).
• Swivel joints are leakage free; one of our swivel joints once was tested at random with Helium
(while heated and rotated) and proved to be tighter than a valve as stipulated under 'TA-Luft‘
(German environmental standard for ball valves).
• Same diameter swivels are interchangeable.
• Function check, between product and ball race seal

Why chosing
KANON
• The dynamic seal face of the inner body is provided with a polished stainless steel surface
for long and excellent sealing.
• A 100% leak free swivel joint guarantees safe operation for the operator and his
environment, safety first.

Spare parts for swivel joints

No spare parts are needed for the start up, due to the fact that the loading arm is fully tested by a leak
test in the workshop and therefore we guarantee a 100% leakfree swivel joint and loading arm,
without having any problems for many years.

Overview of information
Swivel Joints

Introduction:
To make rigid fluid handling pipe constructions flexible, swivel joints can be used.
This is a much better solution than using hoses or compensators, because the
swivel joints are made of rigid metals which can be pressure tested as a rigid
material.

By using a swivel joint there is a 360º rotation possibility in one plane and in case
of using three swivel joints there is a rotation possibility in three planes and in this
way all movements can be made.

Loading arms are always provided with three swivel joints or more and therefore
are acting like a hose, but with a longer life time and a convenient and safe
operation.
KANON has developed several types of swivel joints, as listed below, for several
specific requirements.

General description and applications:

SAN812 Standard swivel joint for a wide range of products.

Size 6" - 20" , buttwelded and flanged execution.

SAC817 Cryogenic swivel joint for products like Ethylene and

LNG. Size 2" - 12"
SRS822 Special swivel joint for toxic products like Chlorine and
Mercaptan. Size 2" - 4"
SRL825 PTFE lined swivel joint for products like Hydrochloric
Acid. Size 2" - 4"
SAN831 Standard swivel joint for a wide range of products.
Size 1" - 4" , buttwelded and flanged execution.

SAL835 Low height swivel joint for a wide range of products.

Used when height is limited. Size 2" - 4"

Other types:
• High pressure 1" - 16".
• Low friction for floating suctions.
• Two parts (low budget).

General
Top Loading Description
Arms Bulletin 1/2

Introduction:
Top loading arms are designed to load (or unload) tanks by the top. These tanks can be
either small containers (barrels), rail- / road tankers or ISO containers.
Standard top loading arms are provided with four swivel joints for the product line and a
balance system (counterweight or multi-coil spring cylinder).
Top loading arms can be equipped with a large number of accessories. Depending on the
requirements involved, the design can vary between standard Kanon solutions and fully
customer specific.

Three different systems for top loading can be distinguished:

Open Loading
In case of open loading, the drop pipe has no provisions such as a cone, coupler or flange
to avoid exposure of the handled liquids to the outside environment.

Semi-closed loading
When liquids which are dangerous to health or environment are loaded or unloaded, a top
loading arm could be equipped with a manhole cone and vapour return line. This is called
semi-closed loading. The cone will cover the manhole during the loading sequence, so that
product vapours will be released through the vapour line and product splashes will not cause
risks to the operator.

Fully closed loading

Fully closed loading might be required in case the handled liquids are pressurised, dangerous
or are not allowed to be exposed to air. In this case the top loading arms should be
equipped with a flange or coupler for connection to the truck tanker.

Basic characteristics:

• Diameter : 2”(DN50), 3”(DN80), 4”(DN100) and 6”(DN150)

• Materials (piping) : carbon steel, stainless steel, low temperature steel, PTFE-
lined steel, other materials on request.
• Seal faces : Stainless steel, duplex, Hastelloy, or other on request
• Seals : PTFE-C, PTFE-virgin, FPM, NBR, UHMW-PE,
or others on request
• Balancing : counterweight or spring cylinder
• Temperature range : -200°C up to +300°C
• Pressure range : maximum 120 bar

Introduction:
Bottom loading arms are used both for open loop and closed loop fluid transfer.
Standard bottom arms are provided with five swivel joints and a multi-spring balance
cylinder. A second balancing system can be applied to keep the connecting pipe
in a straight horizontal direction, in case the connecting pipe is equipped with heavy
items such as ball valves, breakaway couplers or dry-break couplers.
Bottom loading arms are mounted to a self-supporting column with locking facilities.

Two different systems for bottom loading can be distinguished:

Open loop transfer
When open loop transfer is allowed, only one single loading arm may be used.
However, the tank system should be protected against vacuum or overpressure by
means of tanker pressure relief, vacuum break valve or other means.

Closed loop transfer

In case of closed loop transfer, double loading arms are usually used, called Bottom
Loading Stations. One loading arm is then used for liquid transfer, a second arm
takes care of vapour/gas balancing between the tank/storage systems.

Basic characteristics:
• Diameter : 1”(DN25), 2”(DN50), 3”(DN80), 4”(DN100) and 6”(DN150)
• Materials (piping) : carbon steel, stainless steel, low temperature steel, PTFE-
lined steel, other materials on request.
• Seal faces : Stainless steel, duplex, Hastelloy, or application specific
• Seals : PTFE-C, PTFE-virgin, FPM, NBR, UHMW-PE, or others on
request
• Balancing : Spring cylinder
• Temperature range: -200°C up to +300°C
• Pressure range : maximum 120 bar

Construction details
The KANON bottom loading arms for filling road tankers are provided with double
articuled boom arms, the inner arm is flanged onto the 6" flanged heavy duty
swivel joint.

This swivel joint is the base swivel joint carrying all the weights.

The outer arm is perfectly balanced by KANON ’s adjustable spring balanced

cylinder.
KANON spring cylinders with multiple compression spring packages can be
adjusted to meet changing operating conditions.

Compared with conventional designs, KANON adjustable spring cylinders excel in

terms of safety and long life.

As a standard, KANON bottom loading arms are provided with a quick release
locking device. With this provision the bottom loading arms are parked in such a

When the Top Loading Arm is to be connected to the truck by means of flanges or
quick coupler, a 5th swiveljoint is mandatory. This additional swivel joint
compensates for connection that are not in the horizontal plane. This prevents
unwanted stress in loading arm and truck manifold.
If a 5th swivel joint is used, the vertical balancer is recommended. It ensures one
man operation without push and pull of loading arm during connecting phase.

Level control unit Description

Function
KANON's adjustable level control system gives an electric signal at preset
product level. This signal can be used to start or stop product flow thus
preventing overfill.

Working principle
KANON's level system is pneumatically operated. Standard air (or nitrogen)
supply is fed to a bubblepipe. The system detects product reaching outlet of
the bubblepipe by means of sensing very small pressure differences (maximum
2 cm water column).
KANON's system is compensated for sur-pressure in tank up to 0.1 bar. All signals
are connected to a terminal strip inside a control box. KANON's control device
signals are designed according the fail safe principle (allow loading instead of
stop loading).

Options
• High high level for two stage (un-)loading, with just one sensor.
• Pressure feed monitor.
• Additional signal "loading arm secured on manhole".
• Level tracking drop-pipe.
• Bottom touch detection.
• Dry run protection (low level).
• Dedicated bubble pipe for viscose products (i. e. bitumen, sulphur).

Other data
• Ingress protection IP66
• Pmin=5 bar; Pmax=10 bar (with pressdown Pmin=6 bar).
• Switchpoint ≈ 2 cm water column.
• Bubblepipe made of PVDF (or stainless steel)
• Intrinsic safe (if combined with amplifiers)
• Operating temperature -20ºC upto 200ºC
• Making or breaking capacity max. 4A (resistive load in other than intrinsic
safe systems)

Press down unit Description

Function:
The press unit system avoids lifting of loading arm drop-pipe out of the tanker manhole
and provides detection signal of this position. KANON's solution is less vulnerable then
conventional detection systems.

Working principle:
KANON's press unit system is pneumatically operated (air or nitrogen). Once the drop-
pipe is positioned in the manhole and the cone or manhole bracket is placed on the
top of the manhole, the activated press cylinder prevents the arm from lifting out of the
manhole through reaction forces inflicted by the product flow.
The signal "press-down activated" is connected to a terminal strip. The system is
activated by means of a pneumatic 3/2 valve which is mounted on the top of the
drop-pipe. If pressure supply is off or low, loading arm is still in balance and can be
moved easily. KANON's control device signals are designed according the fail safe
principle (allow loading instead of stop loading).

Options:
• Combinations with high level sensors.
• Press down with pneumatically driven up/down movement.
• Pressure feed monitor.
• Combination with anti-drip valve.
• Hook up to customers safety system.
• Joy-stick operation with extension cord.

Other data:
• Ingress protection IP66
• Pmin=6 bar; Pmax=10 bar.
• Pneumatic cylinder with stainless steel rod.
• Intrinsic safe (if combined with amplifiers).
• Operating temperature -20ºC upto 60ºC.
• Making or breaking capacity max. 4A (resistive load in other than intrinsic safe
systems).

Safety Break Loading Arms or Hoses

Valve Bulletin 350068

Description:
Spillage of hazardous chemicals often causes environmental pollution and toxic hazards, as
well explosions and fire. Driveaway and driftaway accidents are of great significance for
(un)loading facilities.
The risk is minimised when the equipment is provided with a KANON Safety Break Valve. In
case the tanker drives away before disconnecting the loading arm, this breakaway valve
safely disconnects the loading arm from the tanker. The main features are:
• Positive shut off.
• Very low product spillage during actual activation.
• Very low pressure drop.
• Accurate break load, therefor no physical damages to equipment.
• Proven design.
• Fits in KANON SAN831 swivel joint, therefor very low installation costs.
• Suitable for (almost) all liquids and gases which do not cause moisture on the pipe wall
and do not coagulate at operating or ambient temperatures.

Function:
The Safety Break Valve (SBV) consists on two valves. Both valve bodies have two connection
flanges; the largest of them is the mounting flange for connecting the loading arm or hose,
the smaller flange of both bodies are connected to each other by break-bolts.
The mounting flanges are according KANON SAN831 swivel joint.

Sectional diagram showing the Diagram showing the Safety Break Diagram showing the Safety Break
Safety Break Valve in normal Valve with the break-bolts broken, Valve with the two valve bodies
open position. the valves close and sealed. fully separated.

Applications:
The operating pressure of the equipment defines the break-bolts selection. KANON Loading
Equipment proposes a break load of approximately 1.5 times the operating pressure.
Higher break loads may cause physical damage to the equipment, with lower break loads
pressure shocks may cause premature activation of the break valve.

Materials of construction:
Valve body & disc: Seals & gaskets: Extras:
Stainless steel AISI 316 NBR (BUNA), FPM (Viton) Counter flanges,
and PTFE/FEP Adapter flanges
(On request available with material certificates according EN 10204 3.1B)

Tester Terramat
Grounding type EK*3
Devices
When loading fuels or other non-conducting hydrocarbons into or from fuel-carrying
vehicles, it is absolutely necessary to ground trucks and wagons in a safe way to divert
electrostatic charges and to prevent a possible generation of sparks that may cause
an explosion. The TERRAMAT-series of electronic grounding-testers were developed for
controlled grounding of tank-trucks, tank-wagons, ships and aeroplanes during loading
and fuelling. The EKS is capable of detecting whether the clamp is connected to the
tank truck or any other grounded object.

The TERRAMAT-series EK*-3

The grounding-testers, types EKN-3, EKK-3 and EKS-3, are build similarly. The only
difference is that their oscillators are suited to the special range of application. The
grounding-tester, type EKT-3, which has no internal oscillator, is a special version that
co-operates with an external oscillator:
Grounding-Tester, Type EKN-3: standard version for grounding road tank-trucks and
railway tank-wagons.
Grounding-Tester, Type EKK-3: special version only for grounding railway tank-wagons
Grounding-Tester, Type EKS-3: special version only for grounding road tank-trucks.
Capacity measurement of the truck enables the EKS-3 to
distinguish connection to a truck or any other grounded
object.

All types have certain features in common that are described below:
•Explosion protection in accordance with European Standards EN 50014ff. and in
conformity with the E.C. directive 94/9/E.E.C.
•Various power supply by 24 V AC, 115 V AC, 230 V AC and 24 V DC.
•Water jet protected aluminium housing (protection class IP 65).
•Two potential-free change over contacts and one NAMUR-compatible, potential-free
•Ex-i-contact for the connection of certified intrinsically safe circuits of explosion
category
•EEx ia/ib IIB/IIC for external control procedures.
•A two-coloured lamp (red/green) for status-indication.
•The oscillator operates as an ohm-capacitive level-detector and detects the resistance
of the grounding-loop.
•The oscillator is supplied with an intrinsically safe electric current. The limit values may be
set when the unit is energised, even during operation of the equipment.
•The individual modules are encapsulated to be well-protected from adverse
environmental exposures. In case of wear or failure, the modular units can be easily
replaced.

Marine Loading General
Arm MLA260 description

Application:
The MLA 260 series are the most efficient marine loading arms on the market,
due to their slim design and the availability of a number of design options to
ensure that specific site requirements are met in the best possible way.
The MLA260 can be used with virtually all liquids and gases which are capable
of being transferred.

Characteristics:

General
The MLA260 model has self-supporting product pipes, which are designed to
absorb all possible forces associated with structural mass, fluid weight, pressure
load and wind load.
The use of a unique double inboard arm has resulted in the smallest design
footprint possible, ensuring that the loads encountered at the MLA260
baseplate are the lowest when compared with any other type of arm.

Balancing
Balancing of the loading arm is achieved by means of a rigid pantograph
structure linking the counterweight to the outboard arm.
The counterweight is designed to rotate, thereby enabling the counterweight
to cater for two different movements. During operations, the arm will be fully
balanced irrespective whether the product pipes are full or empty. The
counterweight is adjustable to enable the balance of the arm to be fine tuned.
Special care has been given to the rotating pivots of the pantograph bar, both
in terms of design and material selection, ensuring smooth operation with a
minimum of required maintenance.

Swivel Joints
KANON swivels are an integral part of every Kanon loading arm and feature:
• 4-point contact ball-races.
• Long life lubrication.
• ‘Tell-Tale’ leakage indicators and in-situ product seal replacement.
• Corrosion proof seal-faces.
The KANON triple swivel joint assembly is self-levelling, allowing easy connection
and disconnection of the loading arm at the ship’s manifold.
Swivel joints are described in detail in separate bulletins.

Marine loading General
arm MLA262 description

Application:
The MLA262 should be selected for special applications such as the transfer of
corrosive or extremely hazardous and/or toxic fluids. The product pipeline is
supported by a separate rigid stucture. This provides the advantage that the
product line can be replaced if needed without dismantling the entire arm.

Characteristics:

General
The MLA262 is designed around a separate supporting frame structure, which is
mounted upon independent, large format bearings to absorb the forces
associated with structural mass, fluid weight and wind load. The product piping
is effectively suspended within the loading arm frame, and is only exposed to
the forces of pressure load and fluid weight. The surface of the frame
construction is minimised in order to achieve the lowest possible wind load
factor.

Balancing
Balancing of the loading arm is achieved by means of a ‘ cable wheel’ system
linking the counterweight to the outboard arm. The counterweight is designed
to rotate, thereby enabling the counterweight to cater for two different
movements.
During operations, the arm will be fully balanced irrespective whether the
product piping is full or empty. The counterweight is adjustable to enable the
balance of the arm to be fine tuned.

Operation:
Kanon Marine Loading Arms can be operated either manually or
hydraulically, depending on product pipe size, physical dimensions and
fitted accessories.

Hydraulic operation requires 2 drives for inboard and outboard arm

movement and 1 drive for slewing (rotation) movement.

Operation of the hydraulic loading arm can be effected by means of:

• Levers directly mounted to the valve block adjacent to the loading arm
standpost - (manual hydraulic operation)
• By pushbuttons on either the operator console or on the remote control
pendant box/wireless set - (electric hydraulic operation).

All KANON hydraulic and electrical control systems are inherently safe. The
hydraulic circuit includes over-pressure relief valves adjusted to 190 bar
maximum (system pressure maximum 210 bar). Specific details of hydraulic
controls are provided in separate bulletins.

Accessories:
Depending on customers needs, the following options can be offered:
• Vapour return line, piggy back style.
• Drain, purge, flush, product recovery and pigging systems.
• Quick connect/disconnect coupling.
• Vacuum breaker.
• Shut-off valve.
• In-situ replacement of swivel joint product seals.
• Range monitoring alarm.
• Isolation flange.
• Centralised ‘Tell-Tale’ leakage indicators for all swivel joints.
• Adjustable support jack.

Kanon's Emergency safety Systems (ERS) are used to ensure best

possible safety in fluid loading/unloading operations with Marine
Loading Arms. The system allows full automatic and safe
disconnection of the loading arm from the ship without product
spillage, when the arm exceeds the operating envelope's limitline.
By means of a simple and unique design, the Kanon ERS provides
intrinsic safety which has been field-proven in many Marine
Loading Arms and applications.
Kanon's ERS systems and specifically the Emergency Release
Coupling are known as 'workhorses' in the fluid transfer industry
providing powerfull performance with 'no' maintenance.

General:
When hydraulic power is required, KANON Marine Loading Arms can be
equipped with hydraulics drives, integrated in the loading arm construction, for
all arm movements i.e. inboard/ouboard and slewing.

Hydraulic pressure for these hydraulic drives may come from one dedicated
"power pack" for one loading arm or, which is more common, a "power pack"
shared by more than one, up to ten loading arms with interconnecting
hydraulic lines and dedicated valve blocks for each loading arm movement.

Control and operating of hydraulically powered loading arms can be done with
direct lever operated valves called MANUAL HYDAULIC control, or with
pushbutton/solenoid operated valves from Jetty-Console or Pendant-Box called
ELECTRIC HYDRAULIC control.

Range alarm and monitoring for safe operation of marine loading arms is
achieved by means of range alarm/systems. KANON offers various types of
alarm systems which may be used for local operator warning, valve and/or
pump switching, remote signaling and/or full automatic disconnecting of the
loading arm from the ship with KANON's Emergency Release Coupling.

KANON's range alarm systems basically comprise following alarm functions:

A) Single alarm system featuring one alarm function for inboard

and outboard movement and slewing movement.

B) Dual alarm system featuring two independant alarms for inboard

and outboard movement as well as for slewing movement; typicaly
used in combination with ERC.

C) Full range monitoring/alarm system featuring continous full range

sensors allowing remote setting of alarm limits, selection of different
alarm settings as well as continous full-range (remote) digital read-
out on CRT-display.

Characteristics:
KANON's hydraulics, control and alarm systems do include unique features and
benefits such as:

•Field proven simultaneous inboard/outboard arm movement in manoeuvring

mode resulting easiest and safest way of loading arm operation.

•Full auto-return comprising automatic controlled return movement of loading

arm to safe rest-position after occurance of an Emergency Release action. This
feature is considered far superior compared to traditional "break and lock"
control system which lock the loading arm in its last position and needs
operator manoeuvring in critical circumstances.

•Highest quality double acting hydraulic drives with stainless steel chromium
plated piston-rods.

•Decentralized solenoid valve block concept resulting in minimum hydraulic

interconnecting piping on jetty (only 1 line for each arm movement).

•Standard back-up hand pump included.

•Hydraulic drives with adjustable tamperproof overpressure regulators

preventing excessive forces on the loading arm.

•Alternatively relay or PLC controls, dependant on system size, interlocking and

remote communication requirements.

•Dedicated pendant box for remote control from shipside.

•Use of safe isolation amplifiers only; no use of traditional safety barriers and
related earthing problems.

•Used of solidstate non-contact proximity range sensors.

•For hazardous area applications, low voltage intrinsic safety and explosion
proof certification according Cenelec standards (other on request).

•Hydraulics in compliance with CETOP.

Equipment B.V. from The Netherlands, is revolutionary:
a Marine Loading Arm carrying up to four dedicated
product lines.

LAYOUT OF EXISTING JETTIES LIMITS FUTURE

A lot of plants and terminals are limited in their expan-

existing jetties were not designed for larger or additional
Marine Loading Arms. Depending on the dimensions,
a single Marine Loading Arm will require 3 – 4 metres
of space on a jetty.
Companies who want to handle several different
products on a jetty and need to transfer these products

It’s no wonder why Kanon has chosen the self-bearing
product piping type with rigid pantograph balancing system
for further development (Figure 3). The combined
advantages have provided the way for a marine loading
arm design which seamlessly matches with the vision of
providing cost-effective, high quality, custom made,
marine loading arms against an absolute minimum level
of required maintenance.
The first development was the introduction of a dual
product-line. The self-supporting design, with a double
riser design and a symmetric layout of the inboard-
and outboard arm structure, results in surprisingly low
bending moments imposed on the jetty deck.
Based on the experience with the dual product line

in a revolutionary type of Marine Loading Arm, the
