4.2 Component Description

4.2.1 The Bracket

The bracket is a painted metal bracket with installation holes and a
shaft. It is installed on a wall or a round or square pillar. The motor
house is installed on the bracket shaft.

4.2.2 The Motor House

The motor house is a painted metal box with an electric motor, a
gearbox and electronics.

The motor house is installed, and can revolve, on the bracket shaft.

The motor house has two holes. Both holes have two self-adjusting
bearings, one at the front and one at the rear. Each bearing is tightened
with three nuts.
The upper hole is for the shaft on the bracket. The lower hole is for the
brush shaft.

The electric motor is installed on the motor bracket at the inside of the
motor house. The gearbox is attached to the motor. The brush shaft is
installed in the gearbox. The motor drives the brush shaft via the
D-I008.0711EN

gearbox.

The power supply cable (attached to the motor) goes from the top of
the motor house, through a protective tube, to the cable bracket. The
cable bracket is attached to the bracket.
At the cable bracket, the power supply cable is connected to the power
supply cable with a plug suitable for the local standard electrical socket.
A power supply cable for the local standard electrical socket is supplied
with the Luna.

4.2.3 The Brush Shaft

The brush shaft is an assembly of a solid shaft, a thin-walled pipe and a
flange.

The brush shaft is installed in the gearbox.

The solid shaft has a threaded hole on both shaft ends and a key-way
and key. The pipe and flange are welded on the solid shaft. A spacing
bush fills the gap between the solid shaft and the bearing on the rear of
the motor house. The spacing bush is installed in the threaded hole in
the shaft, with a bolt and washer.

A stud is installed in the threaded hole at the side of the thin-walled

pipe. It clasps the brush on the pipe, together with a spring house and
spring.

A disk is installed on the flange with four Allen screws. The disk has
cams and is part of the cam clutch.

Description and Operation 4-3

innovators in agriculture

4.3 Operation

When the motor house is deflected more than approximately 15°

clockwise or counterclockwise, the motor starts to rotate the brush. Two
rolling ball switches on the control PCB monitors this deflection and
switches on the motor.
When the angle of deflection is less than 15° for 20 seconds, the motor
stops.

The motor changes the direction of rotation every 20 seconds. This

prevents tails and hair being stuck in the brush.

If the brush is obstructed the cam clutch stops the rotation of the brush.
When the brush is no longer obstructed, it continues the rotation.

4.4 The Brush

The brush is a thick-walled plastic pipe with plastic hairs and two disks.

The brush is installed on the brush shaft.

A disk is pressed into the pipe, at both ends, to fill the space between
the brush shaft pipe and the brush pipe. The disk has cams and is part of
the cam clutch.

D-I008.0711EN
Two colors are used for the hairs to provide the brush with a pattern.
This enables visual confirmation when the brush rotates.

The brush is clasped on the brush shaft with a spring house, a spring, a
washer and a lock nut. The spring house has a hole for the stud
(installed in the brush shaft) and a collar to retain the brush on the
brush shaft. The spring is in the spring house and tightened with a
washer and the lock nut on the stud. A plug is pushed into the spring
house and seals the spring house opening.

4.5 Cam Clutch

The cam clutch prevents injury to the cow when it gets stuck in the
brush.

The cam clutch has two disks, a spring, a spring house, a nut and a stud.
One disk is installed in the brush, the other disk is installed on the flange
on the brush shaft. The spring and spring house are installed in the
brush, on the stud with the nut.

The disks have cams. The two disks are pressed together by the spring
force. The cams provide the necessary grip to turn the brush under
normal conditions. If the brush stops rotating, the disks turn with
respect of each other. The spring raises the pressure on the two disks. If
this force exceeds the force on the brush, the brush starts to turn and
the disks go back to their stationary state.

4-4 Description and Operation

4.6 Cow Hair Conditions

To prevent injury of a cow, and the Luna, it is of the utmost importance

you do not use the Luna with long-haired cows and cows with a long-
haired tail.

Lely strongly advices you to trim the hairs and the tail of the cow
regularly.

5. INSTALLATION

5.1 Introduction

The installation process of the Luna has the following sequence:

• Identification of the installation position
• Installation of the wall socket for the power supply
• Installation of the bracket, motor house, brush shaft and brush
• Connect the Luna to the main electrical supply.

Identification of the Installation Position

Do not install the Luna on a wall or pillar not suitable to carry the load of the
CAUTION Luna and the forces the cow exert to it.
Lely does not recommend to install the Luna on a hardboard or plasterboard
wall.

Do not install the Luna where it can be subject to splashing or spaying of

CAUTION fluids.

Install the Luna on a location where it does not disturb the cow traffic.
CAUTION

Installation of the Wall Socket for the Power Supply

Install the wall socket on a location easily accessible for persons (in case of an
CAUTION emergency) but not accessible for cows.

Use the help of a second person when you must install parts exceeding the
CAUTION maximum weight stated in the local rules and regulations.

Install the Bracket, Motor House, Brush Shaft and Brush

Block the cow traffic to the Luna before you do this procedure.
WARNING

Make sure you have all parts of the Luna and all the tools before you start the
