In the context of social change, communication plays a vital role in helping the people

understand each other and work together for a common goal. Communication serves medium for
social changes. According to Newman and summer communication is an exchange of facts,
ideas, opinions or emotions by two or more persons. It implies that without communication
transfer of idea for changes will not be possible. There are two theories for of evolution of
communication for social change. The first one is the Dependency theory and approaches to
communication. The dependency theory is commonly perceived in the third world or the
developing countries. Most of the countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia were formerly
colonized and ruled by dictators, this is the reason why ideas for social change are repressed for a
long period of time. The people don’t have the rights to voice out their agonies of how the rulers
are governing them. Consequently it became a huge factor of why most of the countries that
were colonized are still under develop. The long term effect of the dependency to colonizer and
foreign rule is still having an effect to the present society which hinder the progress and social
changes of the country.

The second theory for the evolution of communication for social change is the
modernization theories and models. According to Inglehart and Welzel modernization is an
encompassing process of massive social changes that once set in motion tends to penetrate all
domains of life from economic activities to social life to political institution in a self-reinforcing
process. Just like what the theory of modernization implies it reiterates the vitality of modern
technology in educating people for social change. The theory also stated that technology plays a
huge role in the dissemination of knowledge to the poor and that knowledge is the key to
progress and social change. Furthermore the theory also stated that local tradition is a huge factor
why the developing countries are struggling in attaining progress. To deal with this the theory
suggests that developing countries must stop the belief that hinders the modernization. Overall
modernization theory for social change is all about teaching and giving the poor adequate
knowledge to cure ignorance that will result to the decrease of illiteracy among the people which
then can cure poverty to the developing country through the use of technologies that will reach
not only the urbanized community but also the rural community.
