1. Which aircraft was designed to target the hard to hear Russian subs?" not sure If I got it right but one
choice was S-something so I picked that.
-SH-60B Seahawk
2. first jet to do some type of mission, but I forgot, pretty sure I got that wrong.
- Messerschmitt ME-262
6. one question about the Air Force which I probably got wrong. It was something about how they take
off like CTOL or VTOL and a couple more. I picked CTOL cause that's conventional take off and
landing?
7. A couple questions about parts of a ship like "this would measure the width of a boat?"
-(beam)
11. What it means (e.g. critical angle of attack, chord line, stall). Having flight experience is invaluable
here; I actually had to use the knowledge I learned to get my PPL!
-critical angle of attack = stalling not enough lift
-stall = airflow separates from the surface it stops generating lift, thus the wing stalls
14. Actual question: "Which airplane was the main torpedo bomber used in WWII that flew for 15
years in the Navy?" I encountered no weather questions in this section.
-TBF Avengers
15. Which aircraft was converted to an air tanker during Desert Storm
- DC-10 was converted into KC-10
- A-6 was converted into KA-6D
16. which aircraft was the first fighter with capability of escorting bombers over very long distances
-(p-51 mustang)
18. what torpedo bomber was introduced just before the battle of midway and had a 20 year career?
- TBF Avenger
19. what do the guys in the green hats do on flight deck
- Catapult and arrest gear crews,
-maintenance, quality control and cargo handling personnel
-Hook runners, photographers mates, ground support trouble shooters
-landing signal enlisted personnel
A basic knowledge of VFR flight procedures will definitely help with some of the questions, and
KNOW THE COLORS OF FLIGHT DECK CREWS.
-Visual Flight Rules
-the pilot must be able to operate the aircraft with visual reference to the gorund and by
visually avoiding obstruction and other aircraft
-if weather is below VMC then the pilot required to use instrument flight rules
-Low flying rules
-500 ft rule, aircraft must maintain an altitutde of 500 feet above the surface,
exceept over open water or sparsely population areas. Aircraft may not operate
closer than 500 ft to any person, vehicle or structure.
-1000 ft rule, aircraft must maintain an altitude of 1000 ft above the highest
obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2000 ft of the aircraft over any congested
area of a city, town, or settlement
21. What was the first “heavy carrier-based bomber” (Heavy?) (Korean war era?).
-A-3 Skywarrior
23. · If a helicopter is in forward flight, the difference between the lift of the forward-going and
aft-going blades is called what?
-Dissimilar Lift
24. · Where should you land if landing behind a heavy aircraft?
-after the heavy aircraft touched down
27. · In what battle was the Japanese Super Battleship Musashi sunk?
-Battle of Leyte Gulf
Hardest questions:
33. Which of the following was a dive bomber
-(Dauntless).
34. If you are flying on a heading of 090 and VFR, what is an appropriate altitude?
-Had to rack my brain for this one, but remembered that if you are on a heading of 000-179 you fly at
odd altitudes, 180-359 at even altitudes. Then VFR is +500 feet, so the answer is 3000 + 500ft.
35. I got a question about standard pressure in "Hg (29.92), the term that describes the difference
between lift in helicopter blades caused by the retreating and advancing blades
- (dissymmetry of lift)
35a. How many gallons of AvGas should be dumped if the aircraft is overloaded by __ pounds (know
the standard weights of AvGas and Jet A, and it wouldn't hurt to remember oil and water too)
- Gasoline 6 lbs
- Crude Oil 7.2 lbs or 7.5
- Water 8.34 lbs or 3.78 kg
36. What piece of aircraft equipment is related to Squawk and IDENT
-(transponder)
37. The aviation history questions I got were regarding torpedo bombers in WWII
-Grumman Avenger
38. the first manned aircraft confirmed to fly faster than the speed of sound
-(although they used the original designation of XS-1 instead of X-1, which threw me for a loop
for about half a second).
-X-1
39. Know the AvGas weight and how to calculate how much to empty if it is overweight by 80 pounds
41. Know the general airspace classes and history of WWII naval fighters. I also was cut off early here.
-Class B, C D, are airports. B the largest airspace, C and then D smallest. Cylindric Airspace
-Class A 18,000 MSL
-Class E 14,500 MSL (covers area outside B,C,D's cylindric airspace)
-Class G airspace is typically the airspace very near the ground (1,200 feet or less), beneath
class E airspace and between class B-D cylinders around towered airstrips.
-Radio communication not required
-Completely uncontrolled
44. What is the concrete barrier that pops up behind at aircraft taking off from a carrier?"
-Jet Blast Deflector
-feb 15 2016
46. there was a naval history question that I guessed on concerning a battle,
-Pearl Harbor Dec 7 1941
-Battle of Coral Sea May 4-8 1942
-The battle was the first action in which aircraft carrier's engaged each other, as well as
the first in which neither side's ships sighted or fired directly upon the other.
-Battle of MidwayJune 4-6 1942
-Devastating loses for Japanese, 4 JP carriers/1 heavy cruiser sunk. Turning point for
Americans. “Most stunning and decisive blow in the history of naval warfare”
-Battle of Philippine Sea June 19-21 1944
-Last battle of carrier vs carrier
-Great Marianas Turkey Shoot (disproportional loss ratio on JP by US pilots)
-Battle of Leyte Golf October 23 1944
-aka 2nd battle of Philippine sea
-largest naval battle in WW2 and possibly in history
-USS 300 vs JPN 67
-Battle of Okinawa April 1 1945
-Operation Iceberg
-Largest amphibious assault in the pacific war
-most deaths
47. then another one that I wasn't expecting was how to calculate the CG on an aircraft. I should have
absolutely known this, but usually when I do it I have a weight and balance form in front of me to
figure it out. I guessed on this one, the answer for anyone that might need it is:
-Divide the total balance moment by the total weight of the aircraft to give an overall arm (aka
position of CG)
59. A question about what war the longest dog fight in history occurred in.
- (Pretty sure it was WWII)
60. Angle of Attack.
-the angle between the chord of an airfoil and the direction of the surrounding undisturbed flow
of gas or liquid.
61. What does 5 whistle blasts mean?
-danger signal used when other vessel's intentions are not understood
62. Which aircraft first escorted bombers into enemy territory?
-P-38 Lightning
63. Which aircraft broke the sound barrier first?
- X-1
64. Best known dive bomber in WWII used by USN?
-Dauntless
65. What is an F9F Panther?
-Jet
66. What was the first "heavy carrier based bomber?"
-Douglas A-3 Sky warrior
67. Strategic Air Commands frontline bomber in the 1950s?
-B-36

-Avenger
70. What airframe has tilt rotor capability?
- (V-22 Osprey)
71. Which fighter was fitted with tankers during Op. Iraqi Freedom" question.
-I ended up figuring out it was the F-14 Tomcat
Know your Naval designations of aircraft, including before the tri-service designation
system. There were two aircraft in that category that it asked questions about.

Aviation and Nautical information had a lot of info that I didn't study before. Something about moving
around the ship during "General Quarters", needing to dump AVGAS to lose weight (know how much
it weighs) and more. I thought there would be more on parts of aircraft and ships. Its such a broad topic
that I don't know really how to prepare for it but taking in as much random info as you can.
