Assignment 2

The diagram shows the straight lines 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐵𝐶 are perpendicular to each other. The equation of
the straight line is 2𝑥 − 𝑦 − 5 = 0.
a) Find
i. The equation of the straight line 𝐴𝐵 in the general form

2𝑥 − 𝑦 − 5 = 0
𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 5

∴ 𝑚1 = 2
Since 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐵𝐶 is perpendicular,
𝑚1 × 𝑚2 = −1
2 × 𝑚2 = −1
1
𝑚2 = −
2

𝑦 = 𝑚2 𝑥 + 𝑐

Substitute point 𝐴 into the equation:

𝑦 =− 𝑥+𝑐

−3 = − (−9) + 𝑐

ii. The coordinates of point B

Point B is the intersection between line 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐵𝐶

2𝑥 − 𝑦 − 5 = −𝑦 − 𝑥 −

𝑥=−

𝑥 = −1

Since 𝑥 = −1, 𝑦 = 2(−1) − 5 = −7

∴ 𝐵(−1, −7)
b) The straight line 𝐴𝐵 is produced to point 𝐷 such that 𝐴𝐵: 𝐵𝐷 = 2: 3. Calculate the area of
triangle 𝐴𝐷𝑂.

𝐵𝐷 3
3𝐴𝐵 = 2𝐵𝐷

Assume that point 𝐷 has a coordinate (𝑎, 𝑏)

3(−9) + 2(𝑎) 3(−3) + 2(𝑏)

𝐷(−1, −7) = ( , )

3(−9) + 2(𝑎)

−27 + 2𝑎 = −5
2𝑎 = 22
𝑎 = 11

3(−3) + 2(𝑏)
= −7

−9 + 2𝑏 = −35
2𝑏 = −26
𝑏 = −13

∴ 𝐷(𝑎, 𝑏) = (11, −13)

c) A point 𝑃 moves such that its distance from point A is always 2 units. Find the equation of the
locus of P.

(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )2 + (𝑦 − 𝑦1 )2 = 𝑟 2
2 2
(𝑥 − (−9)) + (𝑦 − (−3)) = (2)2
(𝑥 + 9)2 + (𝑦 + 3)2 = 4
𝑥 2 + 18𝑥 + 81 + 𝑦 2 + 6𝑦 + 9 − 4 = 0
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 18𝑥 + 6𝑦 + 86 = 0
