II. Task-based reading

3
Reading is not only an important professional skill, but also a way for us to enjoy creative and
inspiring works of literature that enrich our experiences. Like any other skills worth mastering, a reading
habit requires time and devotion to develop. It is, however, a lifelong source of enjoyment for anyone
who wants to pick up a book.
In order to develop your reading habit and enjoy reading to the fullest, begin practicing good reading
skills. For example:
When you read, read for the main idea of each paragraph along with its supporting reasons. It can be
helpful to read with a pencil in hand to write down the key idea of each paragraph so that you can quickly
know the main idea when you read the book next time.
Merriam Webster online is a wonderful resource for defining unfamiliar words. Simply make a list
of unfamiliar words. When you reach a good stopping point, return to each word and look it up, rereading
the sentence it appeared in. This helps you guess the meaning of the word and its usage in case there are
multiple meanings.
When meeting unfamiliar words or ideas, the historical or social context of the text can offer clues as
to what the writer is talking about. This may require a small amount of outside research to become
informed on the different levels of context presented by a text.
Reading for learning and enjoyment is never to run. Instead, take your time and develop your skills
at your own pace (速度). Do not get discouraged if you are a slow reader, especially at first. Each day, as
you read, your mind will take the reading strategies it learned before and apply them again, often with
greater efficiency.
More importantly, you have to make reading a lifelong habit. To achieve this, you can offer to read
stories or other materials for others in schools, nursing homes or even shelters for the homeless. You can
also go to book festivals where you can learn about new authors and meet authors you have already
known. It’s also a good idea to keep a reading blog as it is a good way to remember books you enjoy and
keep track of what you’ve already read. You can also choose a new language to learn so that you can read
something written in another language.
