Skills Analysis
The following form will help you to understand the skills you possess and any skill gaps you may
have.

Working effectively with others

(For example, on a group project or with children).
Key words: approachability, teamwork, co-operation, rapport, adaptability

I think I can work effectively in a team and regard myself as a good team worker. I
believe I am focused and determined on a task. I work in cooperation with many
other store assistants daily to ensure a part of the store looks clean and
presentable and the stock looks clean and purchasable ready for the next day. I
am approachable and helpful. An example of this is when I helped the new starter
and showed them what to do and ensured if they needed help to come and ask
me.
We can establish a good rapport together in the store and ensure our section is
completed. Hopefully, my adaptability skills improve as they believe they can get
better. I can adapt to different situations and think quickly however there is room
for improvement. As I get more experience to in different business and have to
complete tasks not just in retail but in business such as marketing and finance this
will allow me to improve my skill set and will then improve my adaptability as I can
do many different tasks in different business scenarios
Communication
(For example, expressing your ideas, explaining something complicated)
Key words: listening, enthusiasm, clarity, pertinence, confidence

Communication is a valuable skill that is needed everywhere, my communication

skills are good however they can be better as there is not a limit to how good your
communication skills can be. At college when we work in teams to complete a
teamwork task, I can express my ideas in what I believe will help the team and
complete the task to a high standard. In a team task I can listen to other people's
ideas and present my own ideas with enthusiasm and clarity to ensure my team
understands what I am saying. My confidence skills need to improve, when I come
out of my comfort zone and work with people I have not met or do not know as
much. However saying this my communication skills have a come a long way
thanks to my experience at JD sports serving and dealing with different customers,
for the most part they are pleasant and understanding however this is not always
the case and some customers prove to be a challenge. My communication skills
have come a long way however I believe that communication is a skill that can
always improve and can always get better.
Judgement and decision making
(For example, choosing which assignment to do, which information to include in a project)
Key words: decisiveness, research, planning, reaching a conclusion, evaluation

Completing assignments takes a lot of research and planning as well as

evaluating the information you want to put in your assignment. The
information needs to be precise and clear. The assignment needs to be well
thought out and clear. Whilst working in teams your judgement and
decision-making skills need to be good as your decision could lead to the
downfall of your team and may not be able to complete the task effectively.
Persuading and influencing
(For example, persuading someone to come to a party or accepting your argument)
Key words: communication, leadership, negotiation, charisma, motivation, determination,
forcefulness, vision, empathy

The ability to persuade and influence someone is a valuable skill this is

because team leaders need to be certain of their actions and what they tell
team members. If the team leader is not persuasive and certain of their
actions they are not going to be followed and supported by others as they
believe he is a weak link and does not really know what he is doing. That
need to be able to communicate effectively and learn how to motivate others
whilst demonstrating charisma, motivation, determination as well as
empathy and may have to be forceful to ensure the task is completed.
Ability to solve problems
(For example, maths assignments, coping when team members do not pull their weight)
Key words: critical thinking, analysis, lateral thinking, creativity)

Being able to solve problems is an essential skill and is needed almost

everywhere. In assignments you must be able to think critically, analyse
different information and ensure the piece is effective, clear and some
creative elements are added. Working in teams I always ensure I carry my
weight to ensure the task is completed as well as adding creative ideas and
ensuring the information I input is analysed is correct. Working at JD sports
there are many different situations you are put in and have to help the
customer such as finding out alternatives, checking stock in different stores
and assisting customers as well as helping managers out with different
tasks around the store and therefore being able to do this quickly and
effectively will improve my ability to solve problems.

Time Management
(For example, ensuring your assignments are done on time)

At the start of college my time management skills were not very good, often
being late to assignments. However, I have managed to get a job at JD
sports and since then my time management skills have improved
dramatically. I am now able to get assignments done on time, ensuring I
have time to complete them as well as ensure I do not miss a shift and I am
not late. Balancing college work as well as is extremely hard as it is draining
and strenuous. The mix between work and college has improved my work
ethic and time management as well as other overall attributes.
Use of IT
(For example, word processing a report, using a specialist package to solve a maths problem)

My use of IT is not the best however I am able to create effective

assignments, PowerPoints, and spreadsheets. My math skills need
improving as I am not the best at maths. At college, my IT skills have never
let me down however in future employment they will need to get better
depending on what I go into. Although my IT skills are not the best, they are
sufficient, and I have never been at a disadvantage because of this and my
future are not heavily involved with IT.
Achieving your goals
(For example, getting enough votes to be elected to a role in society)
Key words: determination, commitment, will-power, resolution, stamina, ambition, energy,
resilience

I am trying my hardest to achieve my goals such as complete my course to

get into university or an apprenticeship. Furthermore, I would like to
progress at JD sports as I get older and have more experience. This takes a
lot of determination and commitment. However, this will allow me to improve
my resilience, and will-power. This will help when completing harder and
longer assignments at university or learning new skills and completing tasks
at a professional job or an apprenticeship.
Specialist subject knowledge

Currently unfunnily I do not have a specialist knowledge in a specific

subject. In the future I would like to become a specialist in a business,
specifically a managerial role as this is what interests me, deciding how to
run the business and what the store will look like, being able to
communicate with brands and managing and training staff Furthermore
retail is an extremely large lucrative sector. My job at JD sports will help a
lot as I will learn a lot of different retail skills as well as vital business and
personal skills. I have an aspiration to become a manager however I must
finish my business level 3 course to even get an apprenticeship or a
university course to allow me to do this.
In which skills can you offer plenty of examples where you are using the skill?
The Main skill in which I can show plenty of examples is communication. My
communication skills have improved dramatically however communication is
a skill that can always be improved. Due to my job at JD sports I am always
speaking and listening to customers, staff, and managers. This differs from
informal conversations, customer queries and instructions from supervisors
and managers as well as taking and making phone call to other stores and
customers. Furthermore, I must use communication skills at college when I
am presenting PowerPoints and speaking to classmates and tutors.
In which skills do you have no evidence?

Personally, I believe that I have evidence in most skills even though I may be a
small amount however a skill that I need to improve in is my confidence and
presentation skills. They are not the worst however do need improving. To improve
I can push myself out of my comfort zone more often as well as memorizing notes
and using my body language to give the image I am confident.
