FINENESS TEST FOR GYPSUM
Experiment No.:4

Calculation:

Percentage of retained material (%) = W2 /W1 × 100

W1 = Weight of plaster
W2 = The weight of the plaster retained on the sieve (1.18mm).
Sample No. W1 W2 Percentage The
(gm) (gm) of retained average (%)
material (%)
1. 100 6 6% 6%
2. 100 6.5 6.5%
3. 100 5.5 5.5%
1. ( 𝟔 ÷ 𝟏𝟎𝟎 ) × 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝟔%
2. ( 𝟔. 𝟓 ÷ 𝟏𝟎𝟎 ) × 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝟔. 𝟓%
3. (𝟓. 𝟓 ÷ 𝟏𝟎𝟎) × 𝟏𝟎𝟎 = 𝟓. 𝟓%
The average (%) =( 6 + 6.5 + 5.5 ) ÷ 𝟑 = 6%
The sample is Ordinary plaster
Specification limits: According to the Iraqi specifications No. 28 (1988) , the
maximum limit of the fineness will be as follows:
Type of sample The maximum limit of the fineness
(%)
Ordinary plaster 8
Plaster of Paris (burg) 0
Technical plaster 5
Discussion:
1. What is mean by limit of the fineness
2. What is the effect of limit of fineness if it is more than the value specified in the specifications?
A1/
means the remaining gypsum is large size and stone and wood small n sieve 1.18
mm
A2/
1. the increase will be the increase in the hardening time of the gypsum.
2. the increase will be decrease compressive strength.
3. the increase will be color change of gypsum.
