The State Newspaper / thestate.com
Daytime web producer and reporter, 2005 to the present Professionally managed daily news cycle on thestate.com from early morning to mid-afternoon using roles as editor, copy editor, reporter, visuals editor, marketing professional and multimedia producer. Helped earn best use of Twitter honors in 2011 and top-newspaper-Website honors in 2008 and 2009 (S.C. Press Association) and helped double Web traffic at one of South Carolina's dominant media Web sites between 2007 to the present by publishing breaking news online, using real-time Web analytics to place headlines and visuals, writing and editing high-traffic breaking news stories to maintain local market dominance, and adopting new tools, including newsletters and social media. Won national Associated Press award by increasing AP Video streams on thestate.com in 2010. My in-cycle and design promotional efforts doubled and in some weeks tripled streams over prior period. Managed switch in 2011 from AP to NDN video platform that has similarly increased ad-sharing revenue. Designed and implemented email newsletter distribution strategy and trained staff in use. Played key part in design and deployment of sports pay site, gogamecocks.com, that launched in Sept. 2010, as well as a 2008 redesign of thestate.com. Designed and managed thestate.coms Facebook pages and led development of other social media efforts, including Twitter and Scribd document sharing with traffic alerts, news dissemination, cross promotion and customer service. Managed text alert program starting in Sept. 2010 for news and University of South Carolina athletics, including implementation, debugging, training and promotion. Solved site challenges with technical tools, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and template management, in order to make the most of third-party content and deliver on newsroom requests for custom content promotion. Worked in deadline-oriented environment using contemporary toolkit, including the CCIs Newsgate front end system; Office and Adobe software suites; multimedia news distribution using Vmix and NDN video widgets and players; Zvents calendar widgets and administration; McClatchy Newspaper's custom CMS; and blogging platforms, including Wordpress and Typepad. Designed and maintained database-driven data products using Caspio and custom database solutions, and Tableau visualization software and Google Fusion tables for interactive data presentations. Wrote and maintained wide array of documentation for online staff wiki. Supplied routine and on-demand Web analytics (Omniture). One of three team members who implemented corporate-wide redesign at our local site.

Anderson Independent-Mail:
Reporter from 1998 to 2005 Developed a wide network of local, state and national sources to report and write state- and national-award-winning news stories, focused on health/medical, environment and university research topics that improved the knowledge of readers and reputation of the newspaper. Pioneered multimedia presentations in the early days of newspaper interactive web content in 2005 by conceiving, planning, reporting and executing interactive stories with the help of our staff developer.

Improved the reputation of the newspaper by finding and eliminating common grammatical, spelling and factual errors. Designed news pages on a daily and project-basis, including stories and projects that earned state and national awards.

The Mooring Mast (student newspaper at Pacific Lutheran University):


Editor (junior year) Managed production and business operations of the top student medium on campus. Managed staff of reporters, artists, photographers, designers and copy editors for weekly newspaper. Wrote weekly editorials. Executed a writing workshop for area high school journalists as president of our campus chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Reporter and copy editor (freshman, sophomore and senior years) Wrote general assignment stories to keep campus informed of important events, activities and news. Improved professionalism of the newspaper by preventing publication of errors.

KPLU (campus-based NPR affiliate radio station)
