1— THE MOLTENI GROUP FURNISHES THE NEW WBSC HEADQUARTERS

The Molteni Group took part in the development of the new World Baseball Softball
Confederation headquarters in Lausanne.

The WBSC project started from a formal and sensorial challenge to encapsulate the
history of this sport and its inclination for the future in a single tangible architectural
gesture. The new headquarters is located inside a historical building on General
Guisan Avenue overlooking Lake Geneva in Lausanne. The interior architecture, the
lighting project, every single piece of furniture and custom lighting fixtures, are all
designed by Enrico Muscioni.

The project by “Architettura di Interni” has a contemporary imprint and establishes a

contrast in architectural language in total respect of history, thus formally representing
the future. The project aims to respond to the functional needs by concealing in every
corner of the building the abstraction of these concepts expressed in the internal
distribution flows as the narrative of a sensory experience that speaks of Baseball
and Softball conceived as an archaic place and museum exhibition.

The project wants to respect the outer shell of this historical villa with geometries
that are never affected by the minimal, contemporary interior design. A sense of
perceptive transformation of the elements distinguishing this sport create the space.
Their precise location in strategic points of the building determine the space from a
functional and strategic point of view. The Home Plate, the Diamond, the bat and
the ball and the red stitching are housed in the existing building generating a formal
contrast aimed at the coexistence of History and Future. The space is determined
by episodes that in turn determine time by uncompromisingly marking the entire
building’s layout, causing precise flows of movement within it.

The interior is designed to create a space of calm and serene beauty displaying a
new, tangible perception of Baseball and Softball. The interior spaces, defined by

The furnishings are completed by UniFor systems such as: the Cases System
and Less Less tables by Jean Nouvel, the CF and Wingspan bookcase by Dante
Bonuccelli, the Naos System by Studio Cerri e Associati.

For this new project UniFor also created some custom-designed pieces.
The large conference table pays homage to baseball both in design and in the materials
used. Its central part includes a home plate, a logo that recalls the shape of the pitch
and a typical baseball game pattern. Each workstation provides independent access
to the technical components: sockets, microphones and motorized monitors. Even
the lounge chairs and matching tables, made by UniFor, clearly refer to the ball. The
armchair is externally covered in white leather with the typical baseball stitch.

The dedicated search for historical references through the careful selection of Vitra
icons completes the formal and sensorial synthesis of the project’s common thread,
Baseball.
The celebration of tradition and envisionment of the future are sublimated in the choice
of precise cultural references which are always elegantly and discreetly disclosed by
architect Enrico Muscioni.
It’s no coincidence if the historic Lounge Chairs by Charles and Ray Eames are
situated at the entrance. Designed in the 1950s with the desire to create a generously
proportioned seat, it combines the use of high quality materials and excellent
manufacturing with the comfort and enveloping sensation of a ball in a baseball glove.
The reference to sport as a protagonist is repeated with another great classic by
Charles and Ray Eames, the Aluminium Group chairs that surround the meeting table
are in fact made in a custom finish, with red stitching, a clear reference to the balls
used in Baseball and Softball.

Alongside these two iconic pieces are numerous other classic and contemporary
Vitra items, such as the Alcove Sofa, Joyn, Panton Chair Classic, Physix and the
Work system. Vitra is distributed in Italy by the Molteni Group.
