Hydroxy, Alkoxy and Oxo Acids Rule C-415

415.1 (Partly alternative to Rules C-416.1 and C-416.2) - The names of carboxylic acids
containing an aldehydic and/or one or more ketonic groups in the principal chain or
parent ring system are generally derived from the names of the corresponding simple
carboxylic acids by adding prefixes "oxo-", "dioxo-", etc. (see Rule C-316.2).

415.2 - The prefixes "oxo-', "dioxo-'', etc., are used also in conjunctive names to indicate
substitution.

415.3 - When a carbonyl group is at the point of attachment of a side chain in a
carboxylic acid, the name of the side chain is the name of the acyl radical RCO-
(including formyl HCO-).

415.4 - When a carbonyl group is present in a side chain but not at either end thereof an
"oxoalkyl'' prefix is used.

415.5 - When ring systems are united by a carbonyl group only and one of these ring
systems carries a carboxyl group, the compound is named as an acid containing an acyl
substituent (see Rules C-403.2 andC-404).
