1. GENERAL
A. Scope
1, This specification covers requirements for the design, fabrication and assembly of vessel trays and.
random and structured packing.
2. Exceptions or variations shown in the UOP Project Specifications take precedence over requirements
shown herein,
3. No variations from the UOP Project Specificationsand this specification are permitted unlessapproved
in writing by UOP.
4, Inthe eventof conflict between this specification and other referenced documents, the most restr
definition shall apply. If clarification is required, a written request shall be submitted to UOP.

2. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1, Unfired Pressure Vessels.
C. Definition
‘Assembly or assemblies shall be interpreted to include all the component parts of trays and packed beds
and accessories such as, but not limited to, floors, weirs, downcomers, upcomers, troughs, wells, umps,
baffles, risers, caps, beams, trusses, clamps, boli, washers, gaskets, and specialties of proprietary trays and
packing, as well as support rings, downcomer bars, upcomer bars, and other parts which are tobe welded
to the vessel.
D. Proprietary Tray or Packing Design
Proprietary tray or packing designs shall be of a type approved by UOP for the conditions specified in the
UOP Project Specifications. Trays or packing shall be capable of satisfactory performance at 50% of the
loadings specified in the UOP Project Specifications. Multipass trays shall be designed for equal liquid
‘vapor ratios in each pass of the tray. Caps of valve trays shall have atleast two different thicknesses.t least
three gauge numbers apart and be arranged on a uniform pattern,
gto such data.
If there is agreement by UOP for substitution of proprietary valve type rays in lieuof sieve trays, such trays
shall be designed in accordance with the tray data in the UOP Project Specification. Downcomer
dimensions as shown forthe sieve tray shall be followed as closely as possible. Minor deviations to adjust
for proprietary cap arrangement will be accepted. All valve parts shall be Type 410 chromium alloy for
carbon steel trays and chromium alloy trays. Valve parts for higher alloy trays shall match the tray
metallurgy.
i, MATERIALS
A. 12 Cr Stainless Steel Assemblies
1. All sheet and plate material shall be in accordance with ASTM A 176 or A240 Type 410S or 405.
2. ‘Support rings, downcomer or upcomer bars, and other parts welded to the vessel shall be the same
‘material as the shell in killed steel vessels and ASTM A285, A283, A36 or better in carbon steel vessels,
unless specified to be alloy, when they shall correspond to the vessel shell or lining, whichever is the
higher alloy.
