GENERAL
A. Scope
1. This specification covers the general requirements for the design of this equipment.
2. Exceptions or variations shown in the UOP Project Specifications take precedence over requirements
shown herein
B. References (Latest Edition and Addenda)
1. ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1
2. ‘Standards of Tubular Exchanger Manufacturer's Association (TEMA) Recommended Good Practice
(RGP) Section, as applicable
3. ASME B46.1, Surface Texture
4, National, state and local laws and codes
N.Design
General Requirements
1. All exchangers shall comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VII
and be suitable for an ASME Code stamping when required.
vision 1,
2. All circumferential welded joints shall be one of the following: full penetration double but, full pen-
tration single butt, full penetration single butt with integral back-up ring, double full fillet weld or
full penetration corner joins.
3, Wall thickness for tubular elements and shel pipe shall be:
‘a, When pipe is used for tubes, Schedule 40 shall be minimum wall thickness for carbon and low
alloy steels. Schedule 10 is minimum wall thickness permitted for copper alloy materials. Ven-
dor’ recommended thickness for other materials shall be acceptable,
'. Multitube elements shall be vendor's standard wall thickness unless design pressure requires oth~
€. Shell pipe shall be Schedule 40 minimum wall thickness when carbon steel, and Vendor's recom-
rmendation for other materials.
4, Flange ratings specified are in accordance with ASME B16.5. Flange ratings listed in the project
specification are based on design pressure and temperature conditions only and do not account for
external loads due to piping reactions. ‘The design of al flanges shall account for external loads im-
posed by piping reactions, and consideration shall be given to differential thermal expansion for dis-
similar joints
5. All flanges intended for use with spiral wound gaskets shall have a flange surface finish of 125 Ra
‘minimum to 250 Ra maximum. Finishes shall be judged by visual comparison with surface finish
roughness standards conforming to ASME B46.1.
6. Provide impingement protection in multitube sections consistent with applicable sections of TEMA
Cass R.
7. Flanges for terminal pipe connection shall be supplied by the Vendor.
8, Elements (tubes or bundle) shall be removable without cutting.
9, Minimum velocity tequitement through tubes for water at mean temperature shall be 3 feet per sec~
cond (0.91 meters per second). Alternate designs may be offered to the Owner for consideration if
there is a conflict between velocity requirements and pressure drop limitations.Uop STANDARD SPECIFICATION

Ml, SPECIAL APPLICATIONS
A, Slurry Handling
1, Cycle oil containing catalyst fines (slurry) shall be routed through the shell side of the exchanger un-
less specified otherwise in UOP Project Specification,
Slurry oil velocities at specified process flowing conditions shall be:
‘a. Maximum: 7.0 feet per second (2.13 meters per second)
7 b. Minimum: 3.75 feet per second (1.14 meters per second)
Use interrupted fins (cut and twisted) to promote turbulence of shell side flow.
2. Units shall be arranged for down flow of slurry through the exchanger.
B. Hydrofluoric Acid Service
Process streams with hydrofluoric (HF) acid are referred to as containing Free HF, Dissolved HF, or Trace
HF in the UOP Project Specification.
1, Free HF or Dissolved HF containing streams shall be routed through the tube-side of the exchanger.
‘Tube material shall be killed carbon steel unless specified otherwise in the UOP Project Specification
2. ‘The shell to tube closure joint shall be separated from the tube side closure joint.
3. ‘Threaded tube side connections and/or threaded closure designs shall not be used.
4, ‘Tube side connections shall be the four bolt type.
5. Exchanger intemal gaskets in contact with HF process fluid shall be solid monel or spiral wound mon-
ltype with flexible graphite filler or double jacketed monel with flexible graphite filler.
‘Use weld neck flange for terminal pipe connections.
For the fabrication and thermal treatment of monel paragraphs NF-7 and NF-14 of Appendix NF in
Part UNF of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section VIII, Division 1, are mandatory.
Flame cutting is not permitted. Welding shall be by the metal-atc process ot inert-gas tungsten-ar¢
process.
8. Afier fabrication, full radiograph is required for all steel or monel welded joints, in contact with free
HF or Dissolved HF. Spot radiograph as a minimum is required for trace HF service.
9. After fabrication, stress relieving is required for all steel or monel parts in contact with acid. Steel
paris shall be held at 1100°F (593°C) for one hour per inch of thickness with a minimum of one hour.
Monel parts shall be held at 1150°F (621°C) for one hour per inch of thickness with a minimum of one
hour.

10. Weld repairs on pressure parts shall be completed before heat treatment. If repairs are found necessary
after heat treatment, pressure parts affected shall be heat treated again
C. Sea Water or Brackish Water Service
‘Material for internal elements shall be aluminum brass, 90-10 Cu-Ni, 70-30 Cu-Ni or titanium,
D. Hydrogen Service Construction
‘When the UOP Project Specification indicates that hydrogen service construction i required, the follow-
{ng additional requirements shal be included
1. Separated head closure.
2. Ail parts in contact with hydrogen shall be killed carbon steel, unless alloy material is specified,
3. All double fillet welds in contact with hydrogen stream shall be vented to prevent entrapment of hy-
drogen in the void between the fillet welds.
4. Use weld neck flange for terminal pipe connections.uUop STANDARD SPECIFICATION

E, Wet Hydrogen Sulfide Service Construction
‘When the UOP Project Specification indicates that wet hydrogen sulfide service construction is required,
the following additional requirements shall be included:
1. All parts in contact with wet hydrogen sulfide shall be killed carbon steel unless alloy material is
specified.
2. Provide 3/16 inch (5 millimeters) corrosion allowance for tubesheet and shell pipe and post weld heat
teat unless specified otherwise. After post weld heat treatment killed carbon steel welds must have
a maximum Brinell hardness of 200.
